Introduction | Additional Online Resources | Gender Questionnaire
Gender. This is a subject that has interested me over my entire lifespan, and I'm dedicating this collection to any of you who've ever wanted to know more about gender or wanted to read the perspectives of others who have been exploring diverse issues about the study and experience of "gender".I enjoy bringing men and women together to learn more about one another, and hopefully to better understand one another (and ourselves) better. I'm continually asking questions such as:
- What meanings do each of us attach to "males" and "females"?
- How do our personal biases, impressions, and perceptions about males and females affect the way we relate to members of our own and members of the other gender?
- How do males and females communicate?
- What is the impact of electronic networking on the way males and females interact with one another?
- How can we use information networks to help us understand more about gender?
Many readers have turned to the author John Gray for answers to questions about men and women and relationships. Gray's most popular book Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus: A Practical Guide for Improving Communication and Getting What You Want in Your Relationships. Personally, I do *NOT* recommend Gray's books, as I feel they perpetuate dangerous stereotypes about both men and women that often are not true. Nor can the behaviors of either gender be adequately explained and understood in the type of overly simplistic manner Gray seems to believe. I prefer the discussion provided in a website devoted to debunking Gray's ideas:"Rebuttal from Uranus".
In my own experience, there are as many differences within men and within women as there are between them. Rather than try to create some kind of "cookbook" formula for explaining men's and women's behaviors, I prefer to encourage others to engage in dialogue and personal reflection through the Internet and the Web as well as in personal interactions--to really explore the variety of perspectives and voices of men and women.
The resources on this page focus on a variety of gender-related web sites and online resources. Because I'm also interested in the interplay of gender issues, sexuality, and human relations, and I'd like to encourage you to visit my Web Links collection of articles and web Sites on the interplay of gender, sexuality, and interpersonal relationships. Then, be sure to fill out the gender questionnaire below!
- Additional resources on gender and sexuality, including gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender information, are available in my library human sexuality research collection.
- A separate library collection of resources on interpersonal relationships and family studies is also available.
- If you are interested in resources on counseling and advice, be sure to visit Scott's Counseling, Health & Wellness Room.
Before you begin to explore the resources in this page, why not take out a few minutes to complete the gender questionnaire from the Hungry Mind Review?
These resources include both academic and popular links to sites focusing upon issues of gender. Some provide databases for further research, especially about women's studies, gender studies, and men's issues.
