Introduction

Gender. This is a subject that has interested me over my entire lifespan, and I'm dedicating this collection to any of you who've ever wanted to know more about gender or wanted to read the perspectives of others who have been exploring diverse issues about the study and experience of "gender".

I enjoy bringing men and women together to learn more about one another, and hopefully to better understand one another (and ourselves) better. I'm continually asking questions such as:

  • What meanings do each of us attach to "males" and "females"?

  • How do our personal biases, impressions, and perceptions about males and females affect the way we relate to members of our own and members of the other gender?

  • How do males and females communicate?

  • What is the impact of electronic networking on the way males and females interact with one another?

  • How can we use information networks to help us understand more about gender?

Many readers have turned to the author John Gray for answers to questions about men and women and relationships. Gray's most popular book Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus: A Practical Guide for Improving Communication and Getting What You Want in Your Relationships. Personally, I do *NOT* recommend Gray's books, as I feel they perpetuate dangerous stereotypes about both men and women that often are not true. Nor can the behaviors of either gender be adequately explained and understood in the type of overly simplistic manner Gray seems to believe. I prefer the discussion provided in a website devoted to debunking Gray's ideas:"Rebuttal from Uranus".

In my own experience, there are as many differences within men and within women as there are between them. Rather than try to create some kind of "cookbook" formula for explaining men's and women's behaviors, I prefer to encourage others to engage in dialogue and personal reflection through the Internet and the Web as well as in personal interactions--to really explore the variety of perspectives and voices of men and women.
