What is a Dentist Anesthesiologist?

A dentist anesthesiologist is a dentist who has completed two or more years of post graduate training in anesthesia. The scope of dental anesthesiology includes the physical evaluation, physiologic monitoring, and anesthetic management of patients during the perioperative period of surgical, operative, prophylactic, and diagnostic procedures. Settings where services are provided include private dental offices, ambulatory surgicenters, hospitals and dental schools. The American Society of Dentist Anesthesiologists (ASDA) was founded in 1980 to establish an advanced program for continuing education in pain and anxiety control and to pursue the development of a specialty in anesthesiology for dentistry. Although it is a small organzation, its 113 active members, 80% of whom have recieved two or more years of formal anesthesia training, constitute the most heavily concentrated anesthesia talent of any organization in dentistry. ASDA members have contributed strongly to the discipline of anesthesia in dentistry. They have written the majority of textbooks in the area of pain and anxiety control, have played a major role in the development and delivery of high quality continuing education programs in the field, and have been leaders in research efforts to improve the safety and efficacy of sedation and anesthesia. The ASDA is an affiliate sponsor of Anesthesia Progress, a journal devoted expressly to this topic.
