I have had most of the symptoms since before my daughter who is now two. i was always told that the pain I had was normal and part of being a woman. It is encouraging to see so much information on the net about this condition as not much is know by doct rs and gynae's over here. My only problem is that there are so many support groups within the USA and online chats in the USA but none of these really help me much. Your site however has been most useful. Keep up the hard work.

In Oct. 1994 my GYN found out through lapro. that I had moderate edo. I had my appendix removed and a large cyst off one of my overies. I was put on the birth control pill called Ortocept, and have been on it since then. My pain comes and goes, and most of the time I feel pretty good. My concern is taking this birth control pill for such a long time. I am 39 and am not married nor have any children. At one time my GYN wanted me to have a hysto. but then chnged his mind because he said I may want to try and ave children first.I have itching in my rectrum and been given all sorts of creams for this, I also have terrible breast pain as well. I am hoping to not have to have a hystro, since I do not have perods since I have been on this pill. I am worried about ong term birth control pills and those effects on my body.I suffer from mild depression, but do not take medication for it, I do not like to take pills, and take only vitamins and my birth control pill.

Hello everyone. I really enjoyed your stories and share your frustrations and pain. I have been living with endo for a long time. The first time I was diagnosed, the doctor told me that when I couldn't stand the pain anymore I would just have a hystere tomy. I had one child and wanted more so I tried the hormones. I became pregnant to soon after the treatment and lost the baby in my 4th month. I was devistated. I kept trying. Had another laperoscopy done and the doctor that I was with, painfully sp lled out my options to me. After a week of depression, I picked up my chin and started planning other things in my life. About a month later I found out that I was pregnant. How about that! And they said I would never have another child! This was eig t years after my first diagnosis. Three years after my daughter was born I could no longer take the pain and was offered Depo Provera. Everyday of bleeding was enough for me. I said no more! I've had it! You win! I had my hysterectomy Feb 1999 and a ter a couple of months I never felt better. My life was my own again. I didn't have to organize my activities by the calendar because I felt fine every day. But about 7 months ago I started to get pains in my abdomen. I thought it was an intestinal th ng. Then one day my husband asked me if it was possible that my endo has come back. I couldn't even move. I thought oh no! They told me that it was possible but not common. Well ladies, maybe I'm parinoid, but I've been timing my so called attacks. hey are 28 days apart. Tomorrow I will be seeing a doctor to discuss my problem. I'm scared as hell and I'm tired. I thought everything was over. I guess the outcome will be to remove my remaining ovary and take hormone treatments. I guess that isn't so bad! I guess the thing that I'm scared of the most is having to go through all the tests and treatments and doctor discussions. This is a terrible disease. Yes, there are worse but until you have lived in excruciating pain and almost torn apart your amily because of your emotions souring off into the sky it is really hard to explain the devistation that it can cause as hard as it is to diagnose. I wish everyone success in beating this. My heart is with you all.

I guess I should elaborate on LUPRON a little more. I had 3 injections. Immediate menopause. (while on Lupron) Not only the hot flashes, mean personality (I even couldn't stand myself) but one of the side effects is bone deterioration. Well I have a h rse farm and I couldn't even pick up a scoop of grain let alone a bucket of water. My temper was wicked. I felt as if I was going crazy. My whole body ached. My elbows were in excrusiating pain. I wanted to cry all of the time. I'm usually a very ha py person. So happy that people at work ask me how can I be so happy all of the time. Most of these symptoms lasted about an additional 3 months after the injections were stopped. The only good thing was it was winter time and I'm usually cold. The ho flashes prevented that. Don't ever let a doctor tell you "it will go away, it won't!!!!!! Go see another doctor and keep going until you find the right one. Again if you are experiencing pain and/or heavy bleeding there IS something wrong. You can have symptoms from everythin from painful bowel movements and even painful to expel gas, fatigue, to pain after eating a meal. I would venture to guess that painful period cramps are a classic sign of endo but the doctors cannot tell what it is just by an exam. It took laprascopic surgery to actually see it. Find a doctor who is very experienced in endo. I do not know what it is like to be pain free so I have learned to live with it. I can't wait for my surgery in Jan. I could go on and on and on but if anyone has any questions, feel free to email me. I can only tell you what I have experienced and from what I have read, most every ailment I have had was due to endo. Good luck to all with this nasty disease.

I did want to say, I just went to see Dr Fermin Bueretto. He's located out of Mercy Medical and has an office on Osler Dr in Towson. He actually knew everything I had experienced without me telling him. The reason he knows is because he use to be an in ertility doctor. All makes sense now. I will have surgery in Jan 2001. I'm looking forward to a life without as much pain. I know it may never go away but it is sure nice that after 20 some years there is actually a doctor who knows this disease. My ecommendation is if you have "bad cramps" find a doctor who is well versed in endometriosis. It makes all the difference in the world.

I have stage 4 endo. Took 20 years and at least 12 GYN's to find out. I went to the emergency room last year and had 5 different doctors with 5 different opinions. Everything from I needed emergency surgery to "it's going to go away". One doctor even old me I had PID (pelvic imflamatory disease). I didn't know what that was and he told me it was from "dirty sex". The problem was I wasn't having sex. It was too painful. I didn't know who to believe. I'm not with the doctor who diagnost it because I wasn't satified with the treatment. I'm 41 and do not want children. He did laprascopic surgery and followed up with Lupron. My advise.....DON'T TAKE THE LUPRON!!!! IT IS AN EVIL MEDICINE!!!

Hello all. My name is Tracy, I am 30 and have no children. I am currently engaged for the first time. In Sept. I was doubled over in pain just to be sent home from the hospital as many times before. Over and over I have been told I just have severe cr mping and I am one of those unlucky women. A couple of days later I ended up in the doctors office due to more severe pain. He said he could not find anything but finally agreed to send my to an OBGYN who performed a sonagram or something like that. I ad a cyst larger than a tennis ball on my left ovary. After discussing my options, my doctor immediately called the hospital and had me in the hospital with in an hour. During surgery, they found the endo. My left ovary was 4 times larger than normal an my tube was wrapped around it. There was no way to save it so it was removed as well. They diagnosed it as stage 3 endo. It is still under my uteris, but the right ovary looks pretty good at this time. I took my first Lupron shot in early October. I think I am doing pretty well. I know how frightening it can be to just be diagnosed and I want everyone to know there are people to talk to. Don't be embarrassed or afraid. My prayers are with all of you. Have a pain free weeek. :)

I had a laparoscopy for a large cyst which showed on my sonogram and also elected to have a tubal ligation. At that time I was diagnosed with having endometriosis. Since my surgery in June 1995 I started having health problems and went to Mayo Clinic an was also diagnosed with hypothyroidism, asthma & allergies, mitro valve prolapse, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome. I now have constant abdominal and low back pain. I have refused to take the Lupron injections due to the side effects and it is only a temporary solution. I am now scheduled to have endo excision and a supracervical laparoscopic hysterectomy with a endo etriosis specialist in Atlanta, GA on December 8th, 2000. I am hopeful the surgery will be a success and I can live a normal life again.

I HAD A LAP DONE AN I WAS GLAD THAT THERE WAS A NAME FOR IT BUT I WAS SCARED THAT I WOULD NEVER GET TO EXPERIANCE MOTHERHOOD. AFTER MY SURGERY I HAD FOUR MONTHS OF LUPRON SHOTS ,THE LAST ONE BEING IN DEC. OF 1995 AND I FOUND OUT I WAS PREGNANT IN APRIL OF 1996. I COULD NOT ELIEVE IT,I HAD NEVER BEEN HAPPIER ABOUT ANYTHING IN MY LIFE. AFTER MY SON WAS BORN I DECIDED THAT WHEN HE WAS A YEAR OLD I WOULD TRY TO GET PREGNANT AGAIN. AFTER TRYING FOR A YEAR AND A HALF I HAD ANOTHER LAP DONE AND FOUND OUT I HAD IT AGAIN. THIS TIME WAS NOT GIVEN ANY LUPRON SHOTS AND IT HAS BEEN ALMOST EIGHT MONTHS OF TRYING WITH NO PREGNANCY. IT IS VERY FRUSTRATING GOING THROUGH THIS. I SAID THAT I WILL NOT HAVE A HYSTARECTOMY UNTIL I HAVE A LEAST ONE MORE CHILD I WILL DEAL WITH IT . I AM NOT READY TO GIVE UP MY DREAM OF HAVING ANOTHER CHILD YET. I DON'T THINK ANYONE SHOULD . I WAS TOLD IT WOULD PROBABLY NOT HAPPEN TO ME EITHER BUT IT DID ONCE AND WHO KNOWS MAYBE I WILL GET LUCKY AGAIN. DON'T GIVE UP YET, I KNOW IT IS WHAT YOU FEEL LIKE DOING BUT TA E IT FROM ME I WOULD GO THROUGH IT ALL OVER AGAIN AND A HUNDRED TIMES WORSE TO HAVE MY SON. HE IS THREE AND A HALF NOW AND I NEVER NEW YOU COULD LOVE ANYONE OR ANYHING LIKE THIS. DON'T GIVE UP!!!!!

I was diagnosed with adenomyosis last December. My GYN wants to do a partial hysterectomy. I will schedule it for February, 2001. I have many questions such as should I have a total hysterectomy if there is a history of cervical cancer on my mother's si e of the family and my mother had a hysterectomy in her 50's because of an abnormal pap smear. I will discuss it with my doctor when I see him in December. Can you have a hysterectomy with a epidural and sedation instead of being put under a general? M adenomyosis is pushing on my bladder causing me to wake up at least 4 to 5 time a night. I have been told that my uterus is the size of a 2 month pregnancy. Loestrin seems to be keeping my symptoms from getting worse. I feel that the more research I d , the more confused I feel.

I am getting ready to undergo my second laposcropy in only 3 years. I began having problems in late 1996 once I went off of birth control pills. I am 26, no children, and not married. My doctor says that I really need to consider children, but I can't ee myself raising a child alone after a sperm donation. Pain has been worse the last 6 months. I'm really miserable, very fatigued and have gained 12 pounds in 4 months. Been tested for everything from thyroid, diabetes and chloestrol. Tests all negat ve so we go back to endo. In 1997, my mother, my sister and myself all had a lap. for endo. within a 9 day period. Mother has since had a hysterectomy. I have refused lepron treatment and wonder just how many times I can have the surgery. I need encou aging words. E-mail me.

Hello, I am finally glad to have found a support group in Maryland. When I was 17 I had painful periods and went on birth control pills. I decided to stop taking them at about 20 years old. Then I started getting stabbing pains about a week before and week after my period. I got horrible migraines the week of my period. Imitrex and Zomig were not available then so this started me on my rounds with pain pills. I think I have been on every different kind which I eventually become immune to. In 1992 I had my first laparoscopy. I was diagnosed with Grade I endo. That doctors recommendation to me was to get pregnant (I was 23, not married, and had a full-time job and was a full-time student). The last thing on my mind was to get pregnant. He tried me on many different bcp's.(This was in CA). I moved to MD in 1994 and started having the increasing pain again but much worse with the bloating, painfull bowel movements, painfull intercourse, back pain, and horrible abdominal pain. I knew what it was and I kept a 3 month calendar documenting how I felt. I found a new woman obgyn in MD and she looked at the calendars, examined me and scheduled my 2nd laparascopy. I had endo on my rectum(which they left), pelvic area, bladder, and ureters. I was then put on Lupron injections for 6 months. After the 3rd shot I started experiencing mood swings, joint pain, depression, and a feeling of being "crazy" (I had to take a week off work just to relax per doctor's orders). She then supplemented the Lupron with .5 strace and 40mg prozac while I finished the injections. I will never go on Lupron again! I was pretty much pain free for 2 years (except the week before and the week during my period when I still got migraines). Then it started coming back with a venge ce. I was sent to a neurologist and he put me on Depakote for the migraines. That did not help the migraines but I did gain 15 pounds in 3 months. I went off of the Depakote. I live on the Eastern Shore of MD and the selection of good OGBy's with endo etriosis experience is pretty slim to none. Until now all of my OBG's have been women because I feel more comfortable with them and can empathize with you more (although I met one with no bedside manner). I was referred to a specialist at the University of MD who was a male. I met with him for the first time in 4/2000. I loved his bedside manner. He was very knowledgeable with endo and teaches other doctors about it. By the time I met him I pretty much knew my options. Oh! After first surgery I wen on Desogen birth control pills (they were the only ones I could tolerate and did not give me as many migraines). My option was to have another Lap., go on Lupron, or go on continuous birth control pills and use painkillers. I was already having a period only every 3 months. He switched me to Lo-estrin and I tried it for four months. I gaine 24 pounds in 4 months, felt very swollen all the time, and my breasts hurt so bad. I asked him to switch me back to Desogen. He told me he would do another surger if I wanted to but doing so many surgeries would cause scar tissue which could cause the same amount of pain as the endo. I am now 32 and have had the same boyfriend for 6 years. I just finished graduate school for getting certified to teach elementary chool. I do my student teaching this year and then will have my own class next year 2001. My doctor suggested that I wait to have surgery until I wanted to get pregnant (within a year or two). Since I have switched back to the desogen I started spottin daily and having pain at a level 8 for me. My regular female MD told me to double the amount of Vicoprofen I take when I have alot of pain. She said she could put me on something stronger but was worried about addiction and I was worried about teaching ith the children. I spotted for 3 months and then the OBG told me to go off and have a period (it had been 6 months since my last period). I was in so much pain during this week (10+) that I was taking perocet daily. I started the pills again today to ee if that helps so that I don't spot but the Dr. said it could take months. During this entire time I too have missed numerous days off from work. Once I used up my sick time I had to start using vacation time. (I have been doing accounting work up unt l now). I have never been fired but have switched jobs frequently up until now. I was always afraid to get fired and feared that noone understood what I was going through at work. I was going to plan to get pregnant in a year or two and then have a tota hysterectomy (my mother had one at age 25 after me because of endo). I was under the impression that if you had a hysterectomy the pain would go away. I have spent the last 6 hours on the computer and have read numerous stories about women that have ha hysterectomy's and still have endo. Now I am thinking twice. During this time I also turned to alcohol for the pain since the pain pills were not working. I became an alcoholic. I am not currently drinking but am taking the pain pills. I would love o become part of a group to talk to other women with this disease. Thank you for allowing me to share my story. Christie.

Don't give up! I had my first laparoscopy in 1990 which confirmed that I did indeed have this terrible disease and severely at that. I miscarried once in 1989 at the start of my 2nd trimester, and again in 1990 in my 1st trimester. I saw many ob/gyn do tors (All who wanted to do more surgeries, and for what......so it could come right back? No thank you!) One doctor put me on the Lupron Shots. I did 3 cycles of this. I don't recommend this treatment to anyone. It made me miserable and everyone else around me, (extreme moodiness, extreme depression, hot-flashes, everything terrible you could think of). After 4 years of trying to get pregnant again, my husband and I decided to see a fertility doctor. I did the whole spectrum of options (i.e. intra-u erine-inseminations, chlomid, etc.). After 8 years of trying everything, I ended up trying in-vitro. (While doing in-vitro, it was also confirmed that I had "bad" eggs which fragment easily, which causes miscarriages). It worked! I have the most beaut ful 2 year old twin girls. The Lord has truly blessed me and my husband. Try in-vitro as many times as you can if you are financially able. It can work, even though you have endometriosis. If you do try it and it doesn't work, God may have greater pla s for you and your husband. It takes really special people to adopt! You would be no less a mother than I am. Please feel free to e-mail me if you need someone to talk to. God Bless.

I have had surgery to remove endometriosis and have taken Lupron Injections twice at a 6 month interval. The last injections did very little to stop the pain. I am tired of pain. I was diagnosed in 1994 but I have always had painful periods. I am now 6 years old and have ran out of considerations. I will not get a hysterectomy because it is like the surgery and the Lupron, there is no garrantee it won't return. The only difference is the hysterectomy is more drastic physically and emotionally. I am now just tired of the pain. I pray every night that some cure is made to stop the pain for me as well as others like me.

Hi. My name is Jeannie and I'm 32 years old. Was diagnosed with stage 4 endo through laparascopy. My husband and I were trying to have children and couldn't conceive. I was devastated when my doctor told me. Since then I've been seeing a fertility doc or. He has been very understanding and helful. I was very scared of taking Lupron from everything I had heard about it but he talked to me about it more and I thought I'd try it. I have to say I am impressed with the injections so far. I have no pain nd the swelling has gone down. I get my third shot tomorrow. So I'm almost halfway through the treatment. The only symptoms I have are the hotflashes, moodiness and depression and sometimes the pain in my joints. But these are a walk in the park compa ed to the pain I had before. I am now dealing with trying to accept not having a child. I am eventually going to have to have a hysterectomy and am scared. I have always wanted a child but know that is impossible now thanks to endometriosis. I sympathize and relate to anyone who has o deal with this destructive disease. May God bless you and comfort you.

In my opinion, many diseases, such as endometriosis are due to food allergies... In my experience, Caffeine and dairy are major factors contributing to Endo. I have managed to reduce 90% of my chronic pain by ELIMINATING CAFFEINE COMPLETELY. I have not yet managed to eliminate dairy (it's f!@#ing hard!) but my endo pain is directly proportional to how much I consume. Dairy cows are fed hormones to keep them lactating. Endo feeds on excess hormones... do the math.

My gynecologist said that I had only three options 1) the pill 2)inject method 3)total hysterectomy. But then, those might not all work as a cure alto ether. I'm so frightened. I've read that if a hysterectomy isn't done, it can lead to breast and/or ovarian cancer. I know I'm not the only one, but I need support and don't know where to turn.

I was on several drug therapies, neither of which worked. The pain it caused me was very disabling. I had D&C after D&C done. They not only didn't work, but they often caused more pain. I was to the point of considering suicide because I was in pain constantly and the doctors I went to considered it suitable to continue tap dancing around the problem instead of solving it. I was told I had to get married and have kids before I could have sufficient care for it. I finally went to Dr. Richter who performed a hysterectomy in May of 1996. I can't remember when I felt better before this surgery. A lot of male doctors seem to think until you are 40, severe pain should be your lot in life until a man gets what they want out of you.

I just want to be cured and live a healthy life again, but above that i want everyone to be aware that this occurs not only to older women but to young ones too. This site has helped a lot... I first started having problems 3 years ago. After going to numerous doctors trying to figure out why I had cramps ALL the time (the diagnoses ranging from ovarian cysts to "needing to empty the bowels"!!!)I finally found a doc who thought a laporoscopy w uld be good. At 20 years of age, all I had ever been certain of was my desire to be a mom. The thought of infertility made me so depressed. A very close friend of mine had to have a full hysterectomy due to endo at 35 years of age. I was terrified to thin that that could happen to me! The lap confimed the diagnosis of endo, with treatments of birthcontrl pills (2 a day, every day!!) seems to have helped a little. Lupron is looming in the future, as my doc wants to help me in any way he can. Thanks for the account of the Lupron. It is also reassuring to know that there are other young women suffering from this aswell.
