Special Olympics SportsAny athlete who is eight years of age or older and whose primary diagnosis is mentally disabled is eligible for competition in Special Olympics. An athlete can be multiply disabled (i.e. cerebral palsy and mentally disabled) but the primary disability must be mental retardation. We receive many calls from parents whose children are multiply disabled who are confused about whether their child should compete in Special Olympics or Physically Challenged Sports. As a general rule, if your child is placed in a Mildly Mentally Disabled classroom (MIMD), a Moderately Mentally Disabled classroom (MOMD) or a Severely Mentally Disabled classroom (SMD), they should be participating in Special Olympics. Special Olympics has designed several specific competitive events for multiply disabled children and adults which are geared to athletes with limited mobility and motor skills. Because of the highly competitive nature of Physically Challenged Sports, Special Olympics would be more appropriate for these athletes.Jump to the Special Olympics Sports practice schedules.
Physically Challenged SportsAthletes ages six years old and older who have an orthopedic impairment, neurological disorder, genetic disease or sensory impairment are eligible to compete in these programs. Disabilities may include (but not be limited to) Cerebral Palsy, spinal cord injury, Spina Bifida, traumatic brain injury, Muscular Dystrophy, Osteogenesis Imperfecta, Dwarfism or Blindness. Athletes compete in events sanctioned by Disabled Sports Organizations (DSOs) which design competition specific to their populations. Examples of DSOs include Wheelchair Sports, USA, United States Cerebral Palsy Athletic Association, Disabled Sports, USA, United States Les Autres Sports Association, Dwarf Athletic Association of America or the United States Assocation of Blind Athletes. These organizations have classification systems based on the functional ability of the athlete. Each athlete is assessed by a trained classifier and placed in a specific class, enabling the athlete to compete against athletes of similar ability.
