The
spirit of exploration has guided mankind's search for
himself and his universe. It is a spirit which was
shared by Columbus, Marco Polo and Neil Armstrong. It
guided them to new lands, old civilizations and even
distant planets. It is the same spirit that touched,
in a different manner, the souls of Ghandi, King and
Nightingale.
As a
nurse, I am not in search of a place, time or event.
I seek, instead, to explore the innermost parts of
the human condition; a metabolic mixture of hopes and
dreams, fear and faith, despair and miracles, first
apartment, twenty-fifth anniversary, ninth
grandchild, a frightened spouse in the hall
confronting, for the first time, the limits of our
existence.
As all
explorers, I seek to leave my mark on the roads I
travel. I strive, not to lend my name to a colony,
nor to raise a flag over inter-planetary wastelands,
but to merely plant a seed of comfort, hope and love
where it can flourish and brighten the path of fellow
travelers. It is not, however, a selfless spirit I
follow. In return, it offers adventure, purpose and
meaning to my life.

Of Nursing by Mitchell Davis
