All my life I have been visually impared. In fact, I'm legally blind. Last Tuesday, I took the last in a series of tests (I'm sure you've taken ERG's and EOG's so I wont bother going into detail on how hellish those things are!) For the past two years, specialists have been guessing that I may have retinitis pigmentosa and, on Tuesday, they confirmed it. Every time I get an eye exam done, I end up doing a few tests, myself. Last year, I covered my right eye (with my glasses on) and could read with my left. This year, I tried the same thing, and could not see anything with that eye. It is rather frighte ing..now I know what the blindness will be like in it's earlier stages. I just have a few questions--Do you know of any treatments coming up (I'm already taking high-dosage vitamin A)? Do you know the URL for the retinitis pigmentosa foundation's web site? I would make the descriptions into h perlinks also or put the icons in front of the descriptions. Just my opinion. In the editorial there is a typo (hope instead of hop). Also you refer to the article on Cuba's Medical Center as a booklet, is there a booklet to purchae or is the article complete. It was a little confusing. I noticed that some 21,000 people have visited your site. I think that they all should have signed a petition going to congress ot whoever can give you that visa! You can go to the following site and e-mail Jana. She has a site that allows people to sign etitions for the protection of animals. You may also want to support her efforts. Explain to her - your struggle, and ask her to help you set up a petition for your site. she's very compassionate and I'm sure will help. However it is my opinion that you should do whatever is necessary to obtain that operation you want, including applying for Canadian citizenship. I have tried to take the girls to the Foundation Fighting Blindness (PR Foundation) national convention. I went to the one in Florida in 1992, San Francis o in 1994, and to Washington, DC in 1996. I was off work for three months this winter on sick leave, so my financial situation is tough and I will not be able to attend this years convention in Chicago. At each convention we have learned many things, lik coping skills and some practical educational and household stuff, and some medical research info. But the best part is meeting with other parents, and for my kids, other young people who have this didorder. The friendships we have made are invaluable. I ish you luck on your attempt to find a way to get to Cuba! P.S. we are from St. Johns, Michigan (right in the middle of the "mitten"). |

I just found out that I am leagally blind. My visual fields are 15 degrees. We are self-employed and live seven miles to the nearest town. We are checking into benefits that are available to us. Our biggest concern is selling the business and surviving in town. It would be nice to talk to other individuals with RP and what path they took. I do not have an email address. I am 41 years old and the progression of my condition seems identical to yours. I feel that I will soon have to stop driving and may have to take an early retirement at 45 from a career that I love but my deteriorating vision will probably force it. I read the article on the treatment available in Cuba and I need to know why they would not have such a treatment available in Canada or the States. The cost is extraordinarily high as well and I dont understand why in our progressive fields of medicine i Canada and the US why we would not have the technology here at home. I am most interested in your comments and I think you have done alot more research than I have. I search the internet from time to time on the subject but I think I have become sceptica about any breakthroughs and I have also learned to live with it and accept my eye condition.
