What is TARP?
The Texas Association of Retinitis Pigmentosa, Inc., TARP is a nonprofit, 501 (c) (3) organization based in Texas. It serves as a national information sharing center to provide services to persons with progressive vision loss.
What are our goals?
Since the conception of TARP in 1979, our purpose has been to educate the public in general about eye diseases that cause blindness, and in particular, to assist individuals and their families who have just received a prognosis of Retinitis Pigmentosa and "impending blindness." Once a person leaves the doctor's office with the "bad news," their lives are changed forever. However, with better understanding, guidance, emotional support and connecting with others who have lived with it, the experience need not hold a bleak future for the individual.
What are the symptoms of RP?
- Difficulty seeing in the dark or dim light
- Bumping into objects which seem to appear out of nowhere
- Missing steps and curbs
- Tripping, stumbling and fumbling
- Experiencing mishaps and auto accidents
The Heart of TARP
Retinitis Pigmentosa is an emotional disease, and it is a family consideration for all its members. At the beginning there is much on-going grief and feelings of despair. Guilt grips parents; misunderstanding tears away at the fiber of relationships. TARP is about emotional mending. This human services group is not just another organization for the purpose of sending out resource material and receiving donations. TARP is committed to restoration of the human spirit and motivating others who have lost heart. We also connect people with others experiencing vision loss as well as keeping current research updates.
