Intervarsity Debate

The Intervarsity debate was held in Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) on 1-2 December 1995. It was organised by the Persatuan Mahasiswa Fakulti Perubatan UKM and the Malaysian Medical Association AIDS Action Committee. As the debate was held in conjunction with the World AIDS Day, it was aimed at increasing the awareness of HIV/AIDS among the public and in particular the medical fraternity. University of Malaya (UM) emerged champions of the Intervarsity debate. In the semifinals, UM defeated UKM by proposing the motion "Needle exchange for drug addicts helps check AIDS". Tan Lee Teak was selected best speaker in the semifinals. University of Science, Malaysia (USM) beat International Medical College (IMC) in a walkover win. In the finals, UM defeated USM by opposing the motion "All HIV positive persons should be isolated". Poonkody Nagappan was adjudged the best speaker.
