Comments: I am trying to get information about transient osteoporosis which my 40 year old son was just diagnosed with. He has been in severe pain and after exhaustive tests, this was the conclusion the orthopedist reached. He did not get the feeling from the doctor that there was a whole lot to do except use a cane and in my son's words "suck it up". There was no mention of bone building meds or anything else. Comments: I was diagnosed with the disorder about 6 months ago. One doctor said I was definitely osteoporoic. Another one said I was boderline. I believe the first doctor who has osteoporosis, he should know. I've increased my calcium intake with a lot of skim ilk and 2% cheeses. I've recently read that animal protiens inhibit the absorbtion of calcium. This applies too excessive amounts of animal protiens. How much is excessive? I've not started any medications dealing with this disorder yet. My doctor sugge ted a yearly bone density test. I don't think that is enough. I need to know if what I'm doing is working and/or should I be taking fosamax sp.

Comments: I am 29, have cystic fibrosis, and developed osteoporosis due to taking prednisone. I don't have any choice but to keep taking it because my lungs are getting worse and I'm waiting for a lung transplant. I will have to take prednisone after the transplant too. It only took a year and a half of a low dose of prednisone to cause osteoporosis in my spine. I'm now taking Actonel and the doctors are hopeful it can replace the lost bone. Anyone taking Prednisone or a steroid should be vigilant about getting reg lar bone scans. It never occurred to me that I could lose bone mass so quickly on such a low dose.

Comments: I first had a DEXA scan in 4-97 and osteopenia was found in my hips (-1.7). I had a repeat scan last year aand all areas were the same as the '97 scan. I have done nothing different between the two scans. My doctor seems to think that the low readings n my hips could be normal for me.

Comments: I had a compression fracture of T12 at age 40 I was supprised to find out I have Osteoporsis. I started with Didrnel and moved to Fosamax. I take 1500mg of calcum and D. Comments: I have Ulcerative Colitis (controlled) since 1978. During my 21 years in the military I was constantly bombarded with massive doses of Prednisone. As a result, I had Avascular Necrosis in both Hips and Knees. I had to have both Hips replaced, but not the nees as yet. Is it possible that the long term Prednisone use caused my Osteoporosis ? Comments: I have been diagnosed with osteoporosis and have had previou compression fractures in my back. recently I lifted a fairly heavy object and strained my back. The pain is just above my waist and on both sides of my body. It feels as if it is in the muscle area, but this happened on 13 June 2000 and although it has eased some, it still hurts terribly, specially after I am inactive for a while and then try to get up or move. After I have moved around for a short time and take a tylenol, the pain eases considerably. I went to the V.A Doctor and he pushed and pressed on the affected area, but I had taken a tylenol before going to the doctor, so I didn't have much pain during his examination. Comments: Monday (6/5/00) I discovered that I had at least 25% bone density loss. That information came from a xray that I had taken of my back for my chiropractor. He needed that to give his final ok on my starting wind surfing this season. Well, needless to sa , there is no wind surfing this year but I still have high hopes about the 2000/2001 ski season. Comments: Diagnosed as severe. Probably has alot to do with hormone theraphy - the fallback position for folks with prostate cancer who's primary treatment has failed them. Many urologists and oncologists probably know very little about bone integrity.

Comments: My husband, Bill, was diagnosed with osteoporosis about 3 years ago, after taking Synthroid for several years. I'm about 5" taller than him, but had noticed over a period of time that he was getting even shorter. I mentioned it to his Dr, who immediately ade an appt for him to have a Dexascan. Sure enough, he had osteoporosis and was put on Foxamax. Two years ago, Bill was paralyzed on his left side after a fall at home and was in rehab for quite a while. Before his accident, we were very active, even cli bed mts. We're now climbing the biggest mt. we could ever imagine...only it's not fun anymore! :-( His 2nd scan showed some improvement, but not a lot, so we thought the Fosamax was doing OK. He leads a very sedentary life now, which has only complicated hings and the last scan showed a remarkable bone loss. He was sent to see an endocrinologist who did bloodwork and urinalysis tests. Also testing his testosterone, which was amazingly high. Of course, they thought it would be very low, but to their surpri e (not mine!), it was very high. He has NEVER taken steroids, of any kind. He is 67 yrs. old, 5'4" tall and has ballooned from 162 lbs, before his accident, to 195 lbs. We have continued to do his floor exercises, per instructions from rehab, but have bee unable to walk outside because of some of his meds. He takes OsCal 600 w/ Vit D (1500mg/daily) plus numerous other supplements and meds. We now have a Nordic Track treadmill and are planning "long walks" on that. The endocrinologist has Bill taking Miaca cium along with the Fosamax and I am researching everything I can to come up with a good solution for us. Our life was drastically changed by his accident, but even more now that he has rampant osteoporosis. I am only 58 and not ready to give up on this w nderful man. Comments: i've been taking prednisone because of eosinophilic granulomatosis and developed osteoporosis because of it.my t scores are -2.6 of the lumbar spine and -2.2 of the hips.

Comments: Liver TX in May of 1997. Immunosurpressants have caused Osteo I'm told by Docs. Treating with 1600 miligrams of Tums daily and Testosteron patch 2.5 miligrams daily. Recently, weaned totally off prednisone. I hope this will help. I am working with weights often. Thanks for making this site available.

Comments: I had a bone density test in July of 1998. I take calcium and fosomax. My density in my spine was -5.1, and in my hips -2.9. A testosterone test gave showed no problem. I haven't experienced any fractures. My druggist told me that if I carry the altz eimers gene that that might explain the low bone density. I probably do carry the gene because of the fact that both older siblings have altzheimers, plus my mother died with it. I would like to know if you think their is a connection with Altz. and bon density problems.

Comments: I am wondering if there are any connection between Osteoporosis and henoch Schonlein purpura? I had hsp when I was 9 yrs old. I've lifted weights most of my life, my work is physical w/lifting. I'm getting ready to see a Nephrologist. Any info would b a great help.
