CHIEF INSTRUCTOR'S CORNER

Dear Member,

I have noticed an increase in parents joining in the physical side of Taekwondo and it is really great as this brings the family spirit into the Dojong, also I have seen many of the young people who would have decided these more motive students now really encouraging and helping which speaks volumes for the quality of Instructors we have in the Union.

Technique and Flexibility

Students of all ages ask after gradings what they can improve on and the most common reply is Technique and flexibility. Lots of students lose their technique because they lack flexibility and this is something that the Instructor should address, if your students lack a lot of flexibility you should be showing them the correct stretches and then encouraging them to stretch more before training, after training and a reasonable amount when they have some spare time at home.

When I am grading a club and I see a student lose their balance because they tried too hard to kick a pad which was too high, I am concerned that this person will continue to make the same mistake again and again unless the Instructor realises that it is better to have balance, form and power low, than to have no balance, form or power high.

When an Instructor has someone holding the pads, it is better to have someone who knows everybody's abilities so they can adjust to help everybody perform to their maximum ability and not to someone elses.

Many students aren't naturally flexible so Instructors must encourage them to work on their natural height where ever it may be and to develop their form and balance then they will progress onto higher kicks which will have power.

Sparring and Control

All instructors must realise with the new O.S.H. (Occupational Safety and Health) laws that sparring is something that needs to be closely monitored as injuries could cost you in the future. As Instructors, the students' safety is your main concern so if you intend to have Full Contact sessions in your classes then provide the necessary safety gear and equipment, also a chilly bin at class with ice for bruises is an excellent idea and a must is a First Aid Kit for all clubs and a basic knowledge of First Aid.

Team Australia

My best wishes go to the Team to Australia which left on the 6th of May to fight the Australian 'C' Team, I know the Wellington contingent has been working their bodies hard andnow these guys and gurls are going to give it their best for New Zealand and the Union. Kia Kaha give them a taste of the food old Kiwi spirit.

Proud to be part of the Union
