~GETTING STARTED~
A lot of people believe that the principles behind losing weight are simple- eat less calories and exercise more. And to some extent, they are right. But you also need to prepare yourself for losing weight, and then keeping the healthy habits you learned for life. Don't look at eating healthy and exercising as deprivation. Reverse that thinking, and think of it as changing your lifestyle for the better and reaching for and attaining the goals that you want for your life.

First, what do you want your life to be? Do you want to be healthy, attractive, have more energy, feel more comfortable, have less aches and pains, feel more in control of your life, go after the job promotion, change careers, learn a new hobby, etc.? Think for a few minutes, and actually write down some goals that would help you get to where you would like to be. Then list the actual steps that you would need to take in order to get you there. For example, if you want to have more energy, you should think of what it would take to achieve that goal, such as "eat more fruits and vegetables", "take a daily vitamin", "exercise regularly", etc. Once you have them written down, your goals look a little more attainable. Now that you have some of your goals and the steps you need to attain the goals written down, keep them where you will have easy access to them and refer to them often. And start putting a plan into action to attain these goals.

I firmly believe in journaling. Besides often referring to my goals and plan of action, I also keep a daily journal of my thoughts, feelings, etc. I keep a food journal with
DietWatch software that records my foods and exercise for each day. I am not on a calorie-restricted diet, but this helps me to monitor where I may be eating too much or lacking nutrients. Journaling in DietWatch also helps me to feel accountable for what I eat and helps me to improve on my food and exercise.

I am not on a "diet", instead my journaling, eating healthy, exercising, drinking a minimum amount of water each day, and staying motivated with the help of others who have similar goals are helping me to reach my goals. In the following pages, I will share information that I have found helpful in attaining my goals and hopefully this will help you in reaching for your goals as well.
