What is Foot Reflexology?

"A science which deals with the principle that there are reflexes in the feet relative to all organs, functions and parts of the human body."

Foot reflexology is the practice of stimulating areas of the feet that correspond to parts of the body with specific hand, thumb and finger techniques. This stimulation is believed to have a positive effect on a person's health and well-being by promoting the smooth flow of enerygy pathways, or "qi", blood circulation and heal illnesses. It should therefore not be mistaken with massage or medical treatment for a critically sick person.

Reflexology is based upon the theory that the body is made up of ten equal and vertical energy zones. Applying pressure to a zone located in the foot affects all the organs and system functions within that same zone.

The concept of zone therapy is based on 4 main principles:

1. The Reflex Principle

The theory of reflex zones is based on the stimulus-response mechanism in our bodies. Whether it is effective in the application as a form of preventive medicine depends on:

Our body is made up of an internally harmonious system whose processes contantly communicate, coordinate and cooperate with each other. Energy currents generated by blood and nerves complement this intricate network.

Through stimulating the reflex actions of our organs, glands and muscles with energy currents, we are able to garner predictable, specific and purposeful respnses that achieve the needs of the client.

2. Theory of Circulation

When an obstacle is placed in an energy channel like acid crystals, waste and calcium deposits, the energy flow is impeded and the function of circulation is then affected adversely. Since reflex zones are nerve endings coupled with the centre of gravity, deposits are liable to deposit at such zones. Through the massage of these reflex zones, one is able to get rid of these deposits via the excretory system and regain proper circulation and functioning of the organs.

3. Analgesic Diagnosis

Based on extensive research, the reflex theory and the symptoms that show up in the reflex zones, a new milestone has been erected to verify the failing functions of the reflex zones in lieu of using only the degree of pain to determine the health condition of the organs.

4. Theory of the Yin-Yang Balance

It relates to the 2-pole theory of every atom and cell in our body. The forces of interaction between the 2 poles which took place constantly causes the circulation of energy, particularly through the head and feet. The 10 separate energy currents that flow in perpendicular median like lines, in turn correspond to certain reflex zones that are linked with certain organs and glands with our body.
