A FEW OF THE ACID BURN
VICTIMS OF BANGALDESH.

Throwing of sulfuric acid on the face and body of young females has become an increasingly popular way of expressing anger or frustration by jilted men, some being jilted lovers, ex-husbands, and the like. Some of these young women are nothing more than unfortunately being at the wrong place at the wrong time. In some cases an entire family have been victimized due to a bad relationship between one person in a family and an outsider.

Sulfuric acid is ubiquitous, being the basic, inexpensive ingredient for making lead acid batteries in all motorized vehicles all over the world. There does not appear to be any way of reducing its availability in any way.  The court systems in Bangladesh has only recently started to administer stiff punishments to perpetrators, hoping that this will work as deterrent to others.

The Shriners Hospital for  Children in Cincinnati, Ohio, has very graciously offered to treat with reconstructive surgery, two of the children who have been the worst sufferers. The organization Healing the Children, with branches in Ohio and in Michigan has offered to arrange for visa, transportation to these girls from Dhaka to the USA and back to Dhaka.
Volunteers are still needed from families in the greater Cincinnati area to help in housing these young ladies for small periods of time during this summer while they are undergoing their treatment at Shriners hospital. On occasion out patient visits to hospital may be necessary to help in out patient care.

Donations from caring families will also be appreciated in meeting incidental expenses during their stay this summer.
