It could change the way you view healthcare

What do you do if your heart stops beating or you stop breathing? Without a Durable Power of Attorney for Healthcare or a Living Will the Physicians are required, by law, to do everything within their powers to prolong your life despite your wishes. This could include Intubation, chest compressions, medications and life support systems. This has lead to many unnecessary increases in financial and emotional strains for the family.

I have worked in the medical field for 19 years. I have held the hands of countless family members while they watch their loved ones put through the trauma of life saving heroics despite the fact that their mother, father, brother, sister or friend did not want that. They just wanted to pass on peacefully. Because they did not have a DPAHC their physicians were required to try every method possible to postpone the inevitable.

A Durable Power of Attorney, also known as a Living Will, gives you some control over your last days on this earth. This document gives someone that you choose the legal right to carry out your wishes. If you do not want to be placed on life support you MUST have this legal document. If you do not wish to have your organs donated you MUST have this document. Without it the physicians must perform every measure humanly possible to extend your life despite the quality of life that you may or may not have. I urge you to get one as soon as possible.

sincerely,

W. Allan Bradley RNC, PHN, MS, ACNP
