Massage for Fibromyalgia / FMS

What is Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is a chronic disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, and multiple tender points. "Tender points" refers to tenderness that occurs in precise, localized areas, particularly in the neck, spine, shoulders, and hips. People with fibromyalgia syndrome (fms) may also experience sleep disturbances, morning stiffness, irritable bowel syndrome, anxiety, and other symptoms. In 1990, the America College of Rheumatology developed criteria that health care practitioners can use to diagnose fibromyalgia. According to the criteria, a person is considered to have fibromyalgia if she or he has widespread pain in combination with tenderness in at least 11 of the 18 tender point sites. Pain resulting from fibromyalgia is real, but can also be subjective.   Many people with this condition find that emotional stress makes the pain worse. Fatigue is also a common aspect of fibromyalgia. Chronic pain, along with anxiety about the problem and how to get well, can be fatiguing by itself. In addition, the inflammatory process within the body produces chemicals that are known to cause fatigue.

Massage Therapy and Bodywork for Fibromyalgia

Massage Therapy and Bodywork in conjunction with treatment by your doctor, can help provide long-term relief from Fibromyalgia pain.  Although the treatment varies according to your individual needs and issues, you will receive a full-body approach that attempts to:

Relieve your pain - using techniques such as Neuromuscular Therapy to release painful trigger points and tight muscle tissues.
Improve flexibility and motion - using Myofascial Release to lengthen contracted and stuck connective tissues including those around fibromyalgia's tender points.  Improved flexibility and motion play a big role in reducing pain and fatigue.
Balance Posture and Muscle Tone - Improving posture with Positional Release and Myofascial Release techniques allows tight muscle and connective tissue to normalize.  This is especially important since abnormally tight muscles tend to weaken the muscles which oppose them.
Improve circulation of blood and lymph - improving circulation to and from your muscles and connective tissues using techniques from Ortho-Bionomy and Natural Reflex Therapy to release neurolymphatic reflex points.
Make sleep more restful - by using appropriate speed and pressure during massage movements that promote relaxation and feelings of well-being.  Sleep can become more sound with fewer interruptions.  Better sleep means better healing.

Massage Therapy and Bodywork used as a treatment for Fibromyalgia may include many massage and bodywork techniques; however, none of the techniques used should cause excessive pain.  Although some people believe that "no pain, no gain" describes effective treatment, nothing could be farther from the truth.  Massage Therapy and Bodywork treatment should generally be comfortable and enjoyable leaving you with less pain, not more.  Mild levels of pain from treatment should be infrequent and of short duration.  Severe pain has no place in your treatment, you have enough of that already.
