The Musings of an Old Lady

Lessons Learned From Life

One of the first lessons one learns, is to play nice. If you can't play nice, then take your toys and go home. (And along with this, one also learns that he who has the most toys, wins.)

Unfortunately, life also teaches us about the "wolf in sheeps clothing". This is something we each have to go through, and we each have to learn it the hard way.

The "wolf" is sometimes the person you thought was your friend. You know, the one who loved to come over and play with all of your new toys. And then when the "new" had worn off, or the toys got broken, this friend was nowhere to be found.

You see, a true friend is the one who comes over to play, even if you don't have any toys. In fact, they will even bring you some of their toys to play with.

Friends and toys! Life was so simple when that is all we worried about. And really, as we get older those are two things that still occupy a great deal of our thoughts. The friends are older and the toys more expensive. But the rules are still the same.

I have given you some of the lessons we all learn in life. Always keep them in mind. It is important that we not forget them.

Now I will give you the best gift an old person can give, blocks. But not ordinary blocks. These are building blocks, carved from Cedar tree and polished with the lessons of the elders. Many lessons learned in life will keep you safe. But, for me, the lessons of the elders will always be there to protect you. Learn them, cherish them, protect them.

The Lesson of the Rose.

No matter where you live, always have a rose bush in your collection of "toys". The rose is not only beautiful and fragrant, but it teaches you humility. For a story about the Cherokee Rose visit here.

Native Prayer

Great Spirit, Give us hearts to understand;
Never to take from creation's beauty more than we give;
Never to destroy wantonly for the furtherance of greed;
Never to deny to give our hands for the building of earth's beauty;
Never to take from her what we cannot use.
Give us hearts to understand That to destroy earth's music is to create confusion;
That to wreck her appearance is to blind us to beauty;
That to callously pollute her fragrance is to make a house of stench;
That as we care for her she will care for us.
We have forgotten who we are.
We have sought only our own security.
We have exploited simply for our own ends.
We have distorted our knowledge.
We have abused our power.
Great Spirit, whose dry lands thirst,
Help us to find the way to refresh your lands.
Great Spirit, whose waters are choked with debris and pollution,
Help us to find the way to cleanse your waters.
Great Spirit, whose beautiful earth grows ugly with misuse,
Help us to find the way to restore beauty to your handiwork.
Great Spirit, whose creatures are being destroyed,
Help us to find a way to replenish them.
Great Spirit, whose gifts to us are being lost in selfishness and corruption,
Help us to find the way to restore our humanity.

For a brief history of our people, go here.

My children, always remember that you are from a proud people. You are Indian, no matter if it is just a drop of Indian blood, you ARE Indian. Being Indian comes from the heart, not from the blood.

Always love to get mail.
