Elizabeth Ewing Award in Adolescent/Youth Health

Elizabeth was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma at age 16 and died three years later at 19. Elizabeth’s family have established this Fund in her memory in the hope that it will help to build a greater awareness for the psycho-social needs of adolescents/young adults, particularly those who suffer from degenerative diseases, chronic illness and severe disabilities. This Fund, which will be administered by the Trustees of the University of Auckland School of Medicine Foundation, continues to be supported by funds raised from the wider community.

Donations can be made to this Fund at any time and of any size. Donations to this Fund should be sent to the University of Auckland School of Medicine Foundation, at the address given below, with a stipulation that they are to be used to support the Elizabeth Ewing Memorial Fund.

Aim

The aim of this Fund is to encourage and promote greater awareness for the need of healthcare providers to acquire the knowledge, skill and understanding of the psychosocial needs of the adolescent /young adult aged patient group suffering from chronic degenerative illness or extreme disabilities.

 

Purpose of the Elizabeth Ewing Memorial Fund

The purpose of this Fund is to provide support for an individual to undertake research in the area of:

"The psycho-social needs of the adolescent/young adult aged patient group suffering chronic degenerative illness or extreme disabilities."

Application Criteria

  • Applicant(s) must be a New Zealand Citizen and a current student enrolled at the University of Auckland and have demonstrated a specific interest in the psychosocial needs of the adolescent/young adult suffering from chronic degenerative illness or long-term extreme disabilities.
  • Applications to this Fund will only be considered if they are to conduct research in the stated area for which this Fund has been established.
  • Applications to this Fund must be made on the appropriate forms obtained from the University of Auckland School of Medicine Foundation office and submitted to the University of Auckland School of Medicine Foundation, through the Faculty of Medicine and Health Science Research Office.
  • Any proposed research to be undertaken must be approved by the Faculty of Medicine and Health Science Board of Research and have received all necessary ethical approval prior to submission of the application.

 

 Administration of the Fund

  • Trustees of the University of Auckland School of Medicine Foundation will be responsible for all aspects related to the administration and management of this Fund.
  • The University of Auckland School of Medicine Foundation will be responsible for convening the appropriate committee to consider all applications to this Fund.
  • The amount of financial support given to any single recipient will be at the discretion of the University of Auckland School of Medicine Foundation.
  • Applicants will be informed of the outcome within one calendar month of application.
  • Successful applicants will be required to submit a report summarizing their activities to the University of Auckland School of Medicine Foundation.
  • Reports emanating as a result of receiving support from this Fund will be retained and filed with the Philson Library. Such reports will be made readily accessible to any interested party.
  • Monies form this Fund will only be disseminated annually.
