DINGHY SAILING HINTS

  DYNAMIC BALANCE is important.

This is the method we use to balance a bicycle which is very stable so long as it is moving. This could have some
relevance to catamarans but is very important for dinghies to achieve fast balance response.
Steer in the direction of the roll - steer the boat to move under the sail. This should be a fast correction which
  should not change the heading.
If reaching when a gust hits pull the tiller  towards you and lean out. This is right for reaching or running, but if
heading into the wind turn closer to the wind  and lean out further or ease the sail. Wind gusts are also a slight
wind shift. For maximum speed into the wind, haul in the sail and find the heading which gives the strongest heal.
Test and hold this by sailing a slightly weaving course.
When sailing off a beach, give the boat a good running push and jump onto the stern in a sitting position.

A safe way to gybe is to allow the boom to swing though about 140 degrees.

Haul sail in                     Change                                   Keep boat                After the boom slams across
about 20 deg.                 direction                                  turning                    return to direction.

Turning can mean that the boat is moved in the opposite direction needed to correct for roll,- lean out
     fast to balance.
BEWARE OF STRONG WINDS !        REEF THAT SAIL !
