I was diagnosed with glaucoma when I was 19 and in college.

At that time, my eyes were very dry and I went to my optometrist and he told me to see a specialist because my pressure was way up.

Dr. Freedman sent me to Mass Eye and Ear and I had a battery of tests and they concluded I had glaucoma. Boy, having your eyes dilated for the first time in Boston on a sunny day is not fun! Dr Freedman said he had not seen eyes so cupped as mine and was surprised that my vision was as good as it is.

I am 42 now, and my eyes (knock on wood) are stable. I had laser surgery in my left eye which has reduced my eye pressure and I am on 2 drops now and 1 pill. My left eye which, is the worst, has lost some vision in my field tests, but its something I haven't noticed. I have 20/20 vision with my glasses on and I thank god that I went to get help quickly before waiting too long.

I feel comfortable taking the drops and I want to stay away from any surgery as long as I can. Each year brings out new drops and I feel that maybe some day they will have a less invasive procedure or maybe even gene therapy.

No one in my family has ever had glaucoma, and at the onset of this disease I thought my dreams of finishing school, having a family and just having some fun would not happen. At such a young age, you think your invincible and to have something as precious as your vision be taken away, was a reality check.

I never take any day for granted. Every night I put my twin boys light on and look at them before I go to bed, and put my eye drops in faithfully.........
