Background


The Malaysian Helmet Initiatives is a consortium of government, university and voluntary organizations dedicated to the proper use of quality helmets for motorcycle and bicycle riding, and recreational activities such as skateboarding, roller skating, etc. We are recognized by theWorld Health Organisation Helmet Initiative as a Cooperative Helmet Initiative Program.

In 2000, there were 6,035 deaths on the road in Malaysia. Motorcycle and bicycle fatalities constituted 58% and 4% of these fatalities respectively. The majority of these fatalities occurred in rural areas. Many thousands had serious or minor injury. Head injuries occurred in about two-thirds and three-quarters of motorcycle and bicycle fatalities respectively. These fatalities can be prevented by the proper use of helmets of certified quality. Head injury form many recreational activities such as skate boarding, roller skating and kayak can also be prevented by the use of helmets.
