I'm an American and not ashamed of having Trich. There are WORSE things we could be doing to our bodies to handle stress...! I am also a teacher and have had several students(all girls) with Trich...I let them know I have the disorder,as well, and that verything is "O.K."! I wish I had known someone with Trich growing up...it would have made things a lot easier!!!!!!!!!!!!

I read your story and it brought tears to my eyes because I can relate to your situation. I have pulled out my hair for so long that my head became numb. I started wearing wigs about 5 years ago.I would pull the hair out of them. I started out going throu h 1 wig per month.Now I'm up to 1 per week.Would love to chat with you sometime! Tammy

I have had this disorder for many years and I am now 24. My parents thought it was puberty. After a few years and many strands of hair later, they decided to send me to see a psychiatrist. She laughed me out of there and said I was a normal adolescent ith a bad habit that I would out grow eventually. Guess what....as you all may know I am still pulling hair out. Why? I know this can be overcome! But I don't even realize I am doing it half the time and it feels good?!?!? Why? I am so scared MY HAIR W N'T GROW BACK! I DON"T WANT TO BE BALD! Please help...someone.

Hello Trichsters - I am 38 years old and have been pulling my hair, lashes & brows since I was 11. My mom never knew anything @ first, but when she did said stop. We all know we can't. Now she knows how serious this problem is. I have been to doctors, been on all kinds f meds, etc. I was on Prozac for 13 years and it worked until it had the reverse action, (made my sickness worse). Then in March of 98' my doctor put me on Effexor and I was pull free for a year or so. Then something very bad happened to me in October o 99' and I started pulling so bad, I had to get a wig. First time I have ever had do wear one. Then about 2 months ago she started me on Paxil and Haldol (there is a longer name for that med, not sure how to spell it right now), but I have been pull fre about 98% of the time. Don't get me wrong I still pull but it may be one or two a day. Also, I no longer wear the wig. I have a full set of eyebrows and lashes also, where I had none @ all. Also, I have 2 sisters that do this also, and they do not ge help for it. I have tried with them, but they just laugh about it. Well, that is my "monster story". I did not realize that trichsters had their own day. That's so far out of the closet from where I started in the mid 60's. It's awesome to see the support out here now, and to know that you are not the only one. It has been so instrumental in my emotio al healing to free myself from the thought that "it's my fault". But, when you learn this from a tender age, you believe that it must be true. I am slowly believing that I am not to blame, and my pain is being released, as am I, from my prison of guilt nd silence. I must thank my husband for all of his loving support, as he is the first man I have ever had the courage to share this trich with. It gives me strength and hope to know there is so much support out there for all of us who fight the monster e ery day. Good luck to you all in your pf efforts!

Hello, I just found out that what I do has a name for it in Dec.1999 I have pulled on and off since I was 11 years old. I quit for 6 years between that time and now. I'm now 27 years old and pray daily that one day there can be a cure. I started pulling again after I had my first and only child. She will soon be 4 years. I hope that she never finds out about my illness. I would like some support if possible. Doctor gave me Zoloft, but I don't like the fact being on anti-depressants. Hi..My name is Sue. Have had trich/ scalp only since I was 13. Had know clue why I started this "habit" and why I just could just not stop. My parents took me to several dermatologists, thinking my hair just "fell out." The third dermatologist put me n valium. It was about 1970 then, and valium was a popular sedative. Fortunately it worked very well, and I have been using the medication on and off to this day to control hair pulling. I'm now 45, pull occasionally...but except for a couple of thin ar as, I have a full head of hair. No wigs, scarves, elaborate covering up needed. In March I had "stumbled" across all these TTM sites on the Web! I was shocked that there were so many sites, and people afflicted! I knew I had "trichotillomania" but tho ght it was EXTREMELY rare. Thank goodness for the new found recognition of this disorder, and it may finally come out of the closet. For most TTM sufferer's we've been ashamed, depressed, and lack self esteem. To this day..I've been unable to stick up or myself, where repeatedly I've let other people take advantage of me. This just leads to repressed self anger, when truthfully, I find these people repulsive that they have no self conscience...and are overly "self centered." It's refreshing to know these sites exist and that I have several fellow TTM friends for moral support! Thank You Sue B.

HI- I am 45- married 22 years with two boys 13 and 10- I have had trich for over 30 years- am currently 65 days pf, but know that I have to stay aware every day, every minute- 10 years ago, I made it to 100 days pf, but then slipped- and fell hard- and to k me this long to even try again-I keep stress toys with me at all times- koosh balls, silly putty, tangle- it helps to have something to figit . I'm 25 yrs old and have had Trich since I was 9yrs. However back in 1985, the counselors my parents sent me to didn't know a name for it. They said it was an anxiety disorder. Hello, I'm kind of scared. I have been a RN for 9 years and I have just realized that I have trichotillomania! I only pull a small section from my scalp every few months usually accompanied increased stress or distress. The section I pull from creates a bald spot about the size of a quarter in the center of my head so I haven't had to resort to changing my hairstyle or being noticed by others. Can anyone answer my questions: 1. Will this condition worsen to the point that I begin pulling out all my hair? 2. I fell so satisfied after pulling my hair that I'm not sure I want to stop, am I crazy? I would appreciate any responses. Thanks!!

Been pulling since age 14, now am 55, so go figure,should be out of the dessert by now, after 40+ years, went to the medical convention for TRICH in Honolulu,Hawaii two years ago, but after a very brief stay of 36 hours, flew back home here to Ohio,major anic attack after the medical convention for TRICH was over,because I was all alone,I never flew till I was 52yrs.old, made them give me my wings, you know like they do the little kids.What started my trich was a major trauma, that is a long story,I'll pu on hold for now!

It is about time we had a day to call our own. For me it isn't about celebrating trich, but about letting others who may suffer from this that know they are truly NOT alone. I have suffered from trich since I was 11 and I just can't seem to overcome it. I have overcome many, many things in my life but I have never had anything take such a dastardly hold of my life like trich has. I've been a puller for 8 years. I am 30. But, I thought about it lately, that, my health could be a lot worse than this. I've been diagnosed with anxiety, stress, depression, etc. I've had suicidal thoughts, but thank God I have an understanding family, and a loving fiance. But, I see all the "handicapped" & ill people around me, especially, children, who don't have a chance to survive. I mean I would rather have THIS "condition", than to be in their shoes. I live in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. I was born in Toronto but my ethnic backround is Korean, I'm 22 years old and I've had TTM for about 13 years now. I read your story and I am so sorry for the life that you had it must be awful to have such a hard time in life,,, I also have a big family 2 brothers and 6 sisters allthough I had a mother and a father too... my daughter is a puller I guess after reading your story I had to say is a puller even though she has not pulled in alongggggg time july of 98 to be exact, One thing she did was she took kava kava to take away the anxiety and stress in her life you may t y taking this if you ever feel stressed or anxious about anything. after reading your story I have to realixe that maybe she has the urge to do this and that maybe it is a struggle for her to stay pull free I am not sure but, I know that she is pull free now and I give credit to the kava kava she took it for almost 7 mo ths and was pf within weeks 2 to be exact. I only will use kava kava again if she needs it to get pull free again, (kava kava is a herb) anyways the reason I say this is because I think will power and nothing is best but, I will use kava kava for her again as I dont ever want her to go threw life without hair as I will always love her as her mother but, I want her to love her self to this s most important. and I think with out the hair she has veryyyyyy low self esteem and if the kava kava gives her the power to take away the stress and the anxiety than I say go for it till it is a better time for you. well, you made a wonderful web page and If I could )))))****HUG YOU*********((((((((((( I would you should be a kid still and seems like you have had a hard life. I do want you to know that I dont think that all trich is caused from a hard life cause my daughter actually has a very easy life, but I do think it is caused from stress and anxiety and also from strep, ear infections as a kid, and anything that has to do with ears, nose or throat. my duaghter had a surgrey before her trich started (on her tounsels taken out). if you like any information I have about kava kava or so on my opions my duaghters success so far etc, just drop me a line and I will email anyone back that cares to hear why she is pf . there are lots of screats to it I think I would be will willing to share .. thanks for the great story Maryann (Emilies Mom)

the bb has been the best place in the world for me!!! Great idea and great website..... "Great oaks start out as little acorns", and I guess those little acorns are us trich- sufferers around the world. Perhaps if we don't feel ready to yell from the rooftops that we suffer from trich--instead we can send a small (or big if you have mucho dinero!) check to Kelly & Mark who so generously keep the Fairlight BB alive and kicking. I am going to get my lazy butt down to the bank and get an international money order made out in U.S. dollars.
