I begin to learn and practiseYANG FORM TAIJIQUAN in end of October 1996 with my teacher Master Lee Hong Meng, since then I have acquired good health and a lot of other benefit like obtaining sound sleep, good appetite and most of all a clear mind. Further more, there are changes within my body and my will power which I am not able to express in words. In another words you have to feel it yourself before you can understand the goodness. I really fall in love with this effective physical health, mental development as well as self defense martial art. The Yang form taijiquan ( or short forms ) of 37 postures is characterized by slow, relax and even pace movement. Believe it or not, most of the people will be surprised and never believe that the slow, soft and relax even pace movement will produce such good results.
A new learner after practising with Master Lee for six months will feel that his or her abdomen is inflated with chi or energy in taijiquan. The area is known as Dan Tian ( 丹 田 ) which is the storage tank of the body's chi or energy . It is located three finger widths below the navel and approximately one or two inches below the surface of the skin. After practising for a further three months the chi at the abdomen or Dan Tian will be strong enough to with stand punches of 30 to 50 pounds ( depend on the practisioner physical health condition ). Then Master Lee will direct the learner to move the chi from the abdomen to different parts of the body to protect oneself.
ABOUT MY EXPERIENCE
Hello! I am Mr.Lim. I live in KUANTAN, PAHANG DARUL MAKMUR, MALAYSIA.
" CHI " OR " JING " and " DAN TIAN " ( 气, 劲 及 丹 田 )
PHYSICAL FORCE OR MUSCULAR FORCE ( 力 )
Physical force is normal to every body, it is just a force created by pulling or extending and contracting your muscles. For example, when an exponent pushes an opponent he will use the muscles from his hands, body and legs, and using the ground as a support to enable him to exert his muscles, thus the force produced is name as physical force.
" JING " OR RELAXING ENERGY ( 劲 )
" Nei Jing " or internal energy ( 内 劲 ) is an inborn, invisible, control approach, latent or potential energy which is concealed or surmerged inside human body.
By providing proper training with techniques of principle, one can transform it to creative and useful somatic energy to perform particular somatic and mental functions.
In Taijiquan Classic, a practitioner after several months of sincere practicing the forms, techniques of push hands as well as learning the principle with subsequent discipline involved, he is fairly obvious having acquired apparent knowledge both in theory and practical usage of principle and movements. He is physically and mentally has obtained adequate magnitude of loose or relaxing balance. Then he begins to train using mind control approach or psycho-approach or " yi nian " ( 意 念 ) to direct the potential energy concealed inside his body moves from one part to another part of body. When the potential energy receives a message, the nerve centre will transmit the signal accordingly and it react and move immediately. The potential energy is now in motion, when the internal flows of energy keeps constant in motion and a physical and mental action incorporates at the same time, the internal energy moves to a selective target, once in contact to a body, it is transformed to kinetic energy and deformed into a breaking force, if the stay still or resistant force which is supporting the opponent's body is greater than the breaking force, as equal weight or recoil force ( reaction force ) is bouncing back to opponent's body and caused him physically or mentally lose control of equilibrium, the opponent is bounced out of balance, forcing standing body falls away.
Thus, this explain, without using any physical force and one's muscles are at loose, relaxing condition, in the circumstances one can push his opponent off balance and bounces away. This shows that one has applied internal energy.
This prevails the proverb " si liang bo qian jin " ( 四 两 拨 千 斤 ) which means " A force of only four teals (ounces) can detach or break ( "po" 破 ) a force of one thousand catties (pounds)." or interprets as " A minimal percentage of internal energy ( 4 % ) can detach or break a heavy force " in the way of internal erergy.
The phenomenal appearance of internal energy is a type of loose, relaxing yet is not softness, but an inborn robotic force which complies of active sunk, buoyant, elastic, sticking, spiral, selective, sensitive, and pliable energy.
The key factors to apply internal energy effectively, a practitioner when emits internal energy into the opponent's body, at the time of action, it must coordinates with appropriate physical, mental technique and descipline of principle.
The illustration is ideally related to the Law of motion which is formulated by the great scientist of the world, Sir Issac Newton ( 1642-1727 ). Who had developed and demonstrated physical energy into mathematical theory.
In contra, the study of Ohm's Law, I=V/R, states clearly how the electric current (energy) of the body can become stronger and more powerful (I)in the presence of less resistance (R) with constant voltage (V). While in Taijiquan practical experience, (I) represents power of internal energy, (R) represents muscular force and (V) represents constant flows of energy.
However, as the practitioner's postures keeps improve, his internal energy becomes more powerful and efficient. In this respect, when he extends his hands to an opponents's body without any muscular weight in relaxing and loose manner, it is interesting to note that an opponent is bounced out without any warning sign. Consequently, the feeling of fell back is caused by an electric shock.
Through this demonstration it helps us to better understand how an exponent can use his loose, relaxing, minimal chi or internal energy to generate stronger internal power or force into an opponent's body until he is out of balance and bounces away.Likewise, the achievement of Taijiquan Classic as a hypothesis, is established and developed as early as about 502 to 557 B.C., according to historical record, indicates it is a mental physical exercise surprises many people that it has a large number of very good reviews in the physical, mental, medical and scientific theory. The physical part is founded, on the nervous system to creat the body's muscles extend, contract and verse visa movements. The mental part is founded in the brain of human being, subjectively, anyone can train or learn to control his or her nervous hierarchies. Having said that, I hope my indication will not intrigue any body get into an almighty muddle.
Many other physical outdoor exercises or indoor games have been recommended for improving our muscular control, many other meditative ways have been suggested for improving our mental health. Whereas in the principle of Taijiquan, it has highly emphsizes the phrase " yong yi bu yong li " ( 用 意 不 用 力 ) which means initiate mental approach or psycho-appraoch instead of using force.Taijiquan sounds at first deceptively a simple, relaxing and slow exercise from outlook, but literally or internally it is an extremely sophisticated forms of rehabilitation, mental development as well as martial art training, rather of redeployment of our body muscles or many other organs. However, if we can sincere practice postures and learn the theory seriously and subsequent discipline involved, consequently, the rewards can be very great indeed, from the basic level of physical balance, fitness and sound mental development to the higher level of selectivity and sensitivity of self defense martial art. By mastering the old method of postures that general misuse of body both physically and mentally as a whole can turn to a new leaf.
Already in exist, well received both in the eastern and western countries, the sequences of taijiquan, is well accepted as a physiotherapy exercise when apply to many slow, even ailment, both physically and mentally such as stress, backache, rheumatism, migraines, respiratory troubles, gastrointestinal problems, high or low blood pressure and a wise spectrum of disorder illness can be alleviated or even recovered without using of drugs after a short period of sincere practicing the postures.
Nevertheless, we understand that electric power or energy and flows of current or voltage can calculate and measure with meter. A doctor uses clinical tools to check sick person's temperature, heart beat and blood pressure. So it is wise to the researcher or scientist of ethology will develop the principle of taijiquan to physical or mathematical theory, which will prove it is an essential and effective physiotherapy exercise, that will bring sound benefits to our human society in terms of better health, mental development and the way will lead to longevity in the near future.
Although in the development of Taijiquan as a self defense is importance. More importantly, the Taoist philosophy of Yin and Yang that already existed as a belief few ( 5 to 7 ) thousand years ago in China, regarding the chi or energy in universal and the related bio-electricity, bio-chemistry and bio-magnetic fields possess in human body, subjectively, can develop the principle into scientific theory, this will be not only a very obvious, great successful event in the field of health science, but also as a martial art.
Bearing in mind, to many people or experts, it is obvious and inamissible, miraculous, unbelievable, inexact, unexampled Taijiquan techniques that has mentioned and described in many books of Taijiquan or has occured in fiction. but does it exist in our real life? Has the taijiquan great masters who had had mentioned or claimed that he had and could demonstrate " LING KONG JING " in his books had put it into reality and teach his best stuff to his student? The answer is certainly unknown and without any historical record!
The above article is based on my current practical learning, practicing, experience, feeling and knowledge of understanding both techniques and theory, I have endeavored in this short note to give an account of it whcih can be helpful to some one who has never heard of it, can be provided enough impetus to enable he or she to take up taijiquan as an exercise in their neighbour hood. Please take note the content will be updated from time to time depending on the level of my knowledge, feeling and experience gained there of.
