CHILDREN AND TEENS BEWARE:- The alcohol and other drug barons are out to deceive you. Don't be a sucker; don't let these criminals destroy your lives. Remember that :- Some soft-drinks are not always what you think them to be. There are now some milk drinks which have alcohol added. There are now Lemonades and Fruit Juices which have alcohol added !! - just to get you hooked !
Manufacturers and suppliers of "ALCOPOPS" (Children's drinks with alcohol added), have admitted targeting under-age drinkers to investigative reporters from "The Sunday Times" . The reporters posed as marketing executives from "Refreshers", a bogus firm claimed to be setting up a new chain of bars specialising in "Alcopops". In confidential meetings, secretly recorded by the reporters, half the senior alcohol industry executives interviewed, admitted that under-age drinkers are among the main buyers of "Alcopops" and that the drinks are intended as a stepping-stone from traditional children's drinks to alcoholic drinks. Claims by the alcohol industry that the new designer drinks do not appeal to underage drinkers and do not cause special problems have been demolished by a new study from Scotland, which shows that the drinks appeal most to 13 - 16 year olds and that those buying drinks such as "Mad-Dog", "White-Lightning" and "Ice-Dragon", drink more, get drunker and are more likely to lose control. Over fifty different "Alcopop" drinks have been launched since 1995. They contain between 4% and 6% alcohol. Some Australian beer has 4% alcohol !
Just because the drinking of alcohol is not considered illegal and is widely used, we tend NOT to think of it as a drug. However, Alcohol IS a DRUG and can be a very dangerous one. Car drivers remember that alcohol slows down your brain and body . It can and does cause many fatal accidents on the road, contributes to male-aggression and, in consequence of that, is responsible for many cases of sexual harassment, rape crimes, domestic violence and the oppression of women in general. For that reason alone, women should be careful to avoid drinking alcohol themselves and closely associating with males who drink it.
Alcohol is QUICKLY absorbed into the blood stream. After drinking an alcoholic beverage, it takes approx. only 15 minutes to begin to affect the brain. The body's ability to eliminate alcohol is cumulative, each drink adding to the amount of alcohol in the blood-stream. The number of drinks that produce a .05% Blood-Alcohol-Level (B.A.L.) varies. Factors that influence this are the statue of the person drinking and/or the food intake while drinking. 4 or 5 "standard" drinks, drunk in a short space of time can produce a B.A.L. reading over .05%.. A vehicle driver is not free from the influence of alcohol for several hours. If the consumption of alcohol continues at the rate of two ** "standard" (The "Standard" is determined by the size/measure of the glass for the respective types of drinks) drinks an hour, the B.A.L. continues to rise. If the B.A.L. reaches .20%, it will take approx. 10 hours to reduce this level to .05%. At .02% B.A.L., deterioration of skill has begun and at .05% the deterioration has doubled !
BEWARE :- Alcohol Slows muscular action, lessens self-control, decreases ability, impairs judgement and blurs vision.
** "STANDARD" drinks contain approx :- for BEER GLASS = 200ml. / 7fl. oz; - WINE GLASS = 90 ml / 3 fl. oz: - SHERRY GLASS = 60ml / 2 fl. oz; - SPIRITS GLASS = 30ml / 1 fl. oz. Incidently, MARIJUANA also causes distortion of vision, inattention, reduction of vigilance and failure to detect signals. Remember that alcohol, even in the smallest quantity, begins to affect the highest centres of the brain - judgement, reasoning and self-control.
