Wow!!!!!What a revelation.Your website and the articles I have read have just described me to a tee! Thank God-I think that after 20 years of thinking something was "wrong" with me and thinking I had every disabilty or mental illness in the book- I'm fin lly piecing it together. I always knew something wasn't right with my social abilities, I have a few very close friends, but I have absolutly no aquantences. I have never felt comfortable in social situations either. I've been diagnosed with ADD, but i new I still had other needs as well this didn't account for my extereme social awkwardness and problems with eye contact. I've thougt that I've had everything from Mental Illness to Autism. But these didn't fit either. I was to empathetic and social wi h my friends to be Autistic and seemed to intuned to be mentally ill. So here I am. I't nice to know that there are people out there like me. Tera you are awesome to produce a site and seem very cool!!!From the bottom of my heart -thank you for sharing our life with us,you've made a difference in mine. I would love to meet other people with NLD. PLease E-mail me if you want to chat!

I'm dyslexic and A.D.D. so if something that I'm reading doesn't catch my attention at first galance I don't want to read it. I read everything you wrote. I want to be a teacher and want to learn about how other people learn. It was good to read your website because it gave me a compleatly opposete view of how to learn. (I'm probably right brained) I love math problems with steps but it took a long time o learn how to read. And the only non-english language I know is ASL (American Sign Language). This was a great website Thank you Alice S.

Thanks for your info. I'm a scared parent of a wonderful 9 year old boy who was diagnosed last May. School is just dealing with it now. He doesn't fit the profile exactly but some things hit home. Basically all the school is doing at the moment is with rawing him from French class - my request, it doesn't work for him- and getting him to learn to type with a software program during that time. They are editing the amount of work he has to do in classroom so that he can keep up yet still show he understa ds. What do you think? I guess I wish you could tell me how to keep him happy -- how to feel good about himself?

I'm still gathering as much information as I can get and every time I think: he has some symptoms but not all of them. If I have enough ground to think he has NLD I think so e doctor must run some tests to confirm it. How was that with you? Who diagnosed NLD with you?

The tests show that she has a nonverbal learning disablility. It's actually a relief!! Now I am able to understand her learning assets & am able to use her strengths to help her learn. My granddaughter is 11 and I had her tested by a medical group over a year ago. The biggest problem is th fact that this is not recognized in NC as a learning disability and the only help she is getting is some extra tutoring which is doing very little good. I have told her about you and try to encourage her all that I can. Thanks for your website. Keep up he good work. Barbara

Thanks for making this page! It's very informative, and it really helped me understand what NLD is. I was recently diagnosed as borderline NLD, but I really didn't accept the diagnosis until recently. It's very interesting to know that there are other peo le with the same problems I have! I've always been a very good writer and speller, and my verbal IQ is genius level. I've also always hated math (I perform on an average level though), had problems with visual/spacial perception, and I've had tons of prob ems making and keeping friends. To top it off, I've had to deal with a very painful and physically disabling condition for the past almost 6 years, so my high school years have been tough! I would love to hear from other teenagers with NLD if anyone is in erested, so please e-mail me at betsyherm@yahoo.com if you want. -Betsy

Hi! So, I'm still trying to come to terms with my NLD. Some of the common aspects don't fit for me, though. I'm good with visual stuff... I'm a web designer and artist. I'm good at describing things and how they look. However, I'm not so good socially. Ri ht now, I'm in high school (I'm 15)... Freshman year was quite the test. Because of my inability to handle social situations with the skill and grace of my peers, I had some problems that taxed my powers of sanity to the very bone. After the whole Columbi e thing, many kids who used to tease me started asking me if I was going to kill them. Many teachers were nervous about me because I sometimes seemed distant. I had a drawing confiscated by a jumpy english teacher, and I guess calling her a fascist and st rming out of the room wasn't the right thing to do. And to the kids who asked why I wore all black, I probably shouldn't have told them I was just waiting for someone to die. Either way, I never threatened anyone's life. Got dragged down to the office and threatened with expulsion, though. Anyway, the next year I got a 504 plan, which is basically a list for teachers of what to do if I "misbehave"... It tells them quite simply that I may not just "know" when they are angry or if I'm doing something that up ets them. The only problem with having NLD is that I do well in my classes and appear to be very smart. Many teachers simply don't believe I have a legit learning (well, more social) problem. I've taken so much shit from teachers who have told me up front they think my parents are just making excuses for me. Hell, I don't even get along with my parents sometimes because of the NLD. What I've found helpful is to find someone else with NLD I can talk to. I've always been in spelling bees and such (the verbal memory thing), and there was this other kid there who always won the state-level ones. It turned out he has had some of the same problems I have. I'm still fighting this battle, and I've gone through years of depression because of it. However, I'm trying omething new that may work for me: biofeedback. Not sure if it's as bullshit new age as chiropractic or acupuncture or herbal therapy, but if i could stimulate those areas of the brain that need it. Well, if it works, great. If it doesn't, whatever. Oh, b w, you talked about a staph infection as a possible cause. What about induced labor? I was two weeks late and my mom induced labor. Apparently, kids who were brought into birth hormonally are showing differences such as NLD as a result of high levels of t e natural hormone used. Anyway, thought that might be the cause for you maybe instead of the staph infection. whatever. thanks for the site.

Thanks for putting up a site by an NLD person rather than merely professionals who study NLD. Hi Tera! Thank-You so very much for your info on NLD. It was very informative, helpful, and interesting for my family and me. I appreciated your good humor. I now know that I am not the only one with NLD. You are a very special, brave, courageous, determined, faithful, ambitious, and kind person who will always succeed at what ever you set your mind to. Always believe in yourself. I just wish the people at my former highschool, Holy Names knew the "real me". Many of them see me as "weird" or different. But that is their problem, not mine. I was picked on by a lot of people in grade school and at Holy Names but I am a stronger person because of it. If anybody ever says something nasty to me, I will just tell them off. They are such jackasses. Another per on who is a jackass is my old guidance counsellor at my old highschool, Vincent Massey. Her name is Mrs. Lee Ann Halpin. She never thought I could amount to anything because of my NLD. If I ever see her again, I am not only going to tell her off but sh w her all of my report cards, certificates of academic achievements, honour roll awards, and other stuff like that. I hated the way the kids from my elementary school, Massey, and Holy Names treated me. But I worked really hard and believed in myself an I DID IT! I graduated from the "Holy Hell Hole." But there were people from Massey and Holy Names who were nice and I am very grateful for that. Anyway, thanks again for your really cool web page. You are AWESOME! Love, Grace

I was born 15 Oct 1954. I've always been a klutz because I have poor depth perception. Until today I'd never heard of NLD, although 5 years ago, after an unofficial IQ testing, I was told that my spatial score was so far below my verbal score that it mi ht indicate brain damage. My late parents expected me to get an A or B in every class except for math and gym -- they knew a C was the best they could hope for in those subjects. I had to read books on mathmatics and do reports on them for extra credit o keep from flunking geometry. I don't remember the name of the nun who taught it, but I do remember smarting from the injustice when she gave me detention for "six months of not paying attention." I WAS paying attention! I just couldn't understand. I needed a tutor to get a C in Algebra II/Trig. I have a poor sense of direction. I get lost so easily. My younger sister has long laughed at me for having trouble telling actors apart. (Worse is having trouble telling acquaintances apart if they have s milar physical characteristics.) Give me a masterpiece of literature and I can probably explain it to you after a quick read-through. (Sometimes I amuse myself by writing back to companies that send self-serving BS pitches and explanations for changes i service. I write pithy translations of their verbiage and tell them what I think of them.) Give me one of those visual puzzles where I'm supposed to move the lines around or something like that and I'm hopeless. I'm not as disabled as you are, but my spatial disability did obscure my verbal IQ score because it lowers my overall score. I spent about 25 years of my life thinking I was only bright normal. After I had my verbal score separated from my spatial sc re, I realized how unfair I've often been to others. There was nothing wrong with them that they couldn't grasp concepts that I thought were painfully obvious. I shouldn't have gotten so impatient with them when they were still trying to get from point to point C and I wanted to discuss point F. Good luck! I found my niche in medical librarianship.

Testing shows a low normal level of funtion in the right brain and a very high normal funtion on the left. I'm tr ing to learn all I can about nvld as his Dr. just diagnosed him. The Dr doesn't know at this point if it is just a developmental delay or a permanant condition since boys often show a developmental delay until 8 or 9. He also has an older sister with seiz res so we'll be testing him for that this summer which may be the reason for the lower function of the right side. ADHD drug trials has also been recomended after we rule out the chance of seizure activity. I want to give him the best chances possible in ife, hence my info search. I am a 17 year old with NLD. I have two more weeks of school left this year and then I will have finished my junior year of high school. After high school I plan to go to a four year college and get my special education teaching credential to help childre overcome disabilities simuliar to the disability which I have overcome. I still experience problems and frustrations almost everyday related to NLD, but I have learned to learn dispite of my disability. This year I have successfuly completed 2 music clas es, English, U.S. History, Geometry, 2nd year Algebra, Chemistry, and Spanish 3. I also swim on the J.V. swim team at school and play on the J.V. water polo team. This would never have been possible without support from numerous friends, my parents, schoo administrators, teachers, tutors, and church leaders. If you're reading this and have NLD, never give up and just keep trying, with appropriate support and help and the right attidude NLD can be dealt with and eventually overcome. If you're a parent, tea her, school admistarator, or friend of an NLD student always support that student, give them extra help, listen to them, and encourage them. That's a big part of what helped me overcome my NLD. I would love to talk to other teenagers or childern with NLD. Feel free to e-mail me at the above address. One last thing, special thanks to everyone who helped me, but especially S.B., J.B., M.M., M.C., K.B., S.H., S.V., M.J., and J.W.

Speaking is oke, but this is difficult. I have a question about NLD. The articles on this site ar all in English. Do you know if there is a translation in Dutch. I can understand the most of theme, but some words are not easy to translate. In Holland there is not that much to find about NLD. Hope you understand what I mean. Joke Elvers.

What a good site! My thirteen year old son has a form of NLD. His is primarily with symbolic information. If it's visual or audio, he's fine. Ask him something symbolic, like 16 - 7 and he's lost. Reading has been very difficult for him as well (read ng is ALL symbols). It's refreshing to see how others have dealt with it.

Unfortunately, nobody at my school site and none of my university college profs(graduate level special ed. profs) have never heard of NLD. To wit, I am in the process of giving one of them(a noted ed. scholar in these parks)information about NLD and I am writing a term paper about NLD to get my special ed. instructional practices prof. up to date. Wish me luck that I can educate these folks so they can educate other teachers taking these courses here n southern California. :-)

Thank you so much for your NLD descriptions. Its the first time I've felt that I could actually understand what NLD is about. All the so called experts just confuse me. I'm trying to "figure out" what my daughter's problems are. She's only 5.5 yrs old but displays some but not all of the NLD characteristics. She displays some of the negatives, but none of the positives. (her rote memory skills are very poor, she has a lot of difficulty with recognizing letters, and she'll be many years before she'll r ad.) But one thing that seems to be in common with you even at 5 is a terrific sense of humor and joy. Thanks again and good luck!

What a great web page. My daughter Charlene has NLD, which we recently discovered this past summer. Like most parents we have done a lot of research, but it is really helpful and refreshing to have something from someone who has NLD. Char is 8yrs old a d will be 9 in Feb/2000. She is currently in grade 3, but her problems started at the end of grade 1. They got worse in grade 2. If her frustration and tantrums hadn't grown so badly that no one knew what to do next, and if I hadn't hung in there (with lots of outside support) she might not have been diagnosed until grade 5 or 6. Charlene also has hydrocephalus and Cerebral Palsy. She is in regular classes and is mobile. She's the sweetest thing you could imagine! Now that we know what is wrong, we re hoping we can help her a lot more. Her worst areas are "Social Skills" and math. How did your parents help you to keep your sense of humour and deal with the disappointments that will surely come up as Char matures? I'd be interested if you ever hav time (after you finish working on all those great 'A's' at school. Good luck Tara! And thanks again. P.S. Charlene has a 16 yr.old brother, a 13 yr.old sister and a mom and dad who all love her very much and want to do as much as we can to help!

I am 48 years old and was diagnosed with NLD about three years ago. I suspected that I might have ADD because my wife and my stepdaughter were diagnosed, so I requested to be tested. I was surprised to be told that I didn't have a learning disability because I didn't have any major defecits in any particular subject which I found very puzzling. The Neuropsychologist did advise me not to take on a full load of subjects in University. He told me that I could call on him if I ever had any problems which was a great comfort to me. A few days ago I started searching to find information on the tests I found there was information on my condition. I enjoyed your Website and appreciate your insight and humour. Hi! Thanks for doing this. My son has NLD, and I will take any advice you can send my way. I try not to get frustrated, but so much of what he does that drives me nuts seems to stem from laziness and lack of concern for others. I really don't want to rag on him all the time, but I don't know how to get through to him, either. I'm not going to rattle on, but I would be interested in anything you can pass on. For example, one night on the internet (I don't know where it was), I read that one mom was g ving her son Ginko Biloba, and that it was helping. I am a nineteen year-old girl from Spring, Texas. I recently found out that I had NLD, accompanied by a major depressive disorder. Today at school I went to what was called an ARD meeting. My mom was there, and she told the committee that when I was little I used to run into things a lot, and I too, didn't start walking until fifteen months of age. That surprised me. But I know that I'm not stupid, it's just somethin that I need to work on. Your article really made me feel better about this whole situation. Thanks for publishing the article.

Hello Tera, Yours was one of 7 sites that came up on the Yahoo search for non-verbal learning disabilities (2 boarding schools twice each, an ad for a PHD for hire) and it is great! Concise and friendly. Our son was diagnosed last week with NLD (sp? - NVL ??) and we are just starting to gather information. Thanks.

Tera - thank you for your personal insight into NLD. My 19 year old daughter has recently been diagonosed with NLD and although I knew she had some learning problems, I did not realize the extent to which they would affect her decision making processes. Now I am desperate to know how to help her to adjust to the "adult world". Thanks again for your page and personal story.

I really want to thank you for talking the time to set up this site. It is wonderful!! I have four children, all of which score high in intelligence. Two of which have discrepensies of 31 and 28 on IQ testing at school. I see a lot of similarities of hat you descibe in my two younger boys, some of my third, and a lot of me when I was younger. I pray that this "new" discovery for me will help in the difficulites my boys are having in school. Also I hope it helps my daughter with some organizational s ills she lacks. I know you've heard this before, but I agree that God is really using you in this site. I really can't thank you enough for this site! God bless and take care. LW :)

Hi Tera! I am a 15 year old girl from Holland and I have NLD too. I can find alot of things about myself in your website. About the remembrance of things, and the way you see things. I am the only girl at my school that reads Shakespear for fun and my best friend s always nervous when I correct her lyrics she sings from the the charts, cause I know thenm all by heart after hearing it 2 times. I am really glad knowing I am not the only one with this problems.I was rejected for a long time as a student from schools and teachers were always yelling at me when I did something wrong with maths or gymnastics. I still do.. but now I am in a special s hool, I finally fit in. And for the first time in my life I am really happy with myself and my life. This is for the parents who read this letter... please tell your kids teachers at the right time (as soon as possible) your kid has NlD, if you don't big roblems can happen like being rejected from friends and teachers and a big depression. Thank you and please email me I you want... Lotte (Kika2

As you know there are so few places where where a young adult-type pers n can explore and learn about what others think about things, ask questions (of importance to them) and learn about ways cope with everyday living, social relations, and especially dealing with parents and the almighty "post-high school years." Best of lu k with this site. Respectfully Peter B.

Hi, i'm the same age as you are, I stumbled on an article today and suddenly have a perfect explanation for my strange childhood. I could talk perfectly very early but walked much later, always felt different from other children at school, I could read at 4 and had strange perfectionist obsessions. Things like periods from history or vetinary science -I read textbooks! I was a very odd child and miserable too. noone knew why, I had serious problems with running and catching and it was all blamed on my shor sightedness. by the time I was 12 I was scoring 140 on verbal resoning but only 90 on non verbal. I was suicidally depressed throughout my early teens and all the time I thought it was all my fault I knew I was bright and I seemed to have a need to aliena e my self by boring or intimidating my peers. I feel much better now, having found a circle of friends whoose culture (politics) is largely verbal. thanks, your page is great give me an e-mail if you'd like.

My son was just this week diagnosed with NLD. He will be in fourth grade this fall and had a really rough third grade - he was labelled as a "problem child" and told repeatedly that he needed to behave, settle down, be quiet, concentrate on his work, etc After reading some stuff on the Web about NLD, I hope I have it in me to be the parent of a child with a learning disability. I am deaf myself (my son has normal hearing) and was diagnosed a few years ago with ADHD, so I know how hard it will be for hi to deal with other people's perceptions of him. Thanks for making this website - it really does help to hear about someone with NLD who is doing well and making it!

I wanted to let you know how helpful your web page has been to me. My 10 year-old daughter was diagnosed this past school year as NLD. After years of going around in circles through the special education system, we finally have an answer that fits. Your d scription of yourself is so much like my daughter it's uncanny. She also taught herself to read by the time she was 3, knew the alphabet at 18 months, started learning a second language ( just from hearing Spanish a great deal at a friend's house). She al o can get lost going down the hall, was thought to have epilepsy because of "staring spells". Your site has been a great help, since it's led me to some very good sources for material to help me help her. It also helped me find some good articles on Asper er's Syndrome, which my 7 year-old daughter has - but that's another story. But it's also reinforced the feeling that we always had that Pam has some wonderful strengths, and her difficulties are not without their requisite blessings. Thank you so much for putting your experiences out there for others like my daughter to see.

I am a NLD college student who has beaten the odds, and done remarkably well as far as school has been concerned. However, the NLD had really killed my social abilities for me. Yes, I do have friends, but it has been a hard uphill battle that has seen a great deal of grief and anger come through me. To complicate matters more, I have cerebral Palsy too. This has made my life interesting to say the least. I have been a fighter even thought I feel sometimes that there is nothing to fight for, but I am a true testiment, that there can be much vicory in the face of NLD. Kiel Moses

Tera, Great web page! An independent psychologist diagnosed me with NLD about 5 years ago, after my first year of college. It was upsetting to realize that the Disability Concerns Department at my school knew very little about NLD and was unable to help me. developed alternative studying methods on my own and eventually graduated. I hope your site will draw more attention to NLD, so others can find help. Keep up the good work!

Our 6 year old son was just tentatively diagnosed with NLD. He will be undergoing more tests in the summer of 1999. He was also delayed in motor skills not walking until he was 3 1/2 and is speech and language is also delayed. He has delays in most are s except the social/emotional area. He is age appropiate, even a little above age, he is quite the "social" butterfly! He has many staring spells and has undergone MRI's and EEG's. That have noticed some seizure activity but not enough to warrant medic tion. At this point we are struggling with our 'little' public school trying to get him the services that he needs. I am looking for research warranting the need for an individual aide for him as he enters 1st grade next year. He has an aid this year, rimarily for safety purposes since he does have a balance problem. He has also been diagnosed with mild cerebral palsy. If you have any suggestions or ideas where I might find more info. to help warrant his aid please write. Many thanks!!

Our daughter (8 1/2yr old) has recently been confirmed with NVLD. Some of the mannerism you descibed about yourself are the exact mannerism the she has. There are certainly some differences. Our daughter is very good at math. Also she has just succesful y completed a swimming class. She does have some social skill challenges. Some of her mannerism are the same that I had/have experienced - such as she has trouble with learning all the childrens names that are in her class. I too have this very embarrisi g problem. But it is of course more difficult for her. I wonder if any of this is hereditary. We appreciate you sharing your life experiences with us. Hello Tera! I am a twenty year old student at the University of Tennessee who has had extreme difficulties with mathematics (especially algebraic type problems) and other symbolic functioning for quite a while. Along with these problems have come several social worries (I constantly misread facial expressions and tone of voice), which have led me to become overwhelmingly shy with other females and very distrustful of people as well. I have also been seeing a psychiatrist for severe depression. I have long wondered what caused these (and other)difficulties, and recently was told about NLD from a member of my boyfriend's church whose 7 year old daughter was recently diagnosed with the disorder. He had apparently been noticing some of what most eople call my "quirks" and began to ask me questions about myself. I told him about my problems, and he told me that I should look at your homepage to get some answers. I am greatly appreciative of the time you have spent to inform people about your disorder. Because of the information you and other people have posted on the web, I have begun to gain an understanding of what may be the cause of great stresses to my life. I am planning on getting back to my psychiatrist about NLD and hopefully I will be able to find some new ways to better cope with my problems. Congratulations to you on your fabulous work, and God bless you. I hope that things go well for you in the future! In God's love, Jessica

Tera-Thanks for your page. I was diagnosed with NLD at age 9, and am now 16 and still struggling. Math has always been tough for me, but Geometry is the worst! I have been in two classes and droped them both because I was recieving failing grades. Now I a being tested for Special Education assistance at my school, but because I recieve A's and B's in all my other classes and take honors classes I dought I will qualify. The social problems of NLD also affect me. I have trouble making friends, adapting to n w situations, and understanding other's facial expressions and tone of voice. Although I have many friends now and am doing well, in middle school I was an emotional disaster because of my social problems. The coordination aspect of NLD has probably afec ed me the most, but because I am determined I have overcome most obsticals I have encountered. In the fifth grade I could not throw a ball one handed, balance on one foot, etc. Now I am involved in competitive swimming, which in the past I have only dreame of. I am on my school's swim team. Swimming on a swim team is something I had always dreamed about. Every summer I took the maximum amount of swim lessons possible. (6-8 weeks every summer, starting at age 4) I was scared to death to try out for the swim team at school, but thanks to the caring coaches I made it on the JV team because I worked so hard. Even though I was the worst on the team, I tried my hardest and improved dramitically. The coaches and my fellow players supported me and gave me much need d extra help. During swim season my self esteam was the highest it had ever been! My goal is to make the varsity team by my junior year. (I'm hoping!!!) If you have NLD don't give up, try your hardest, even if something is hard for you, and you will proba ly be able to do it! Thank you Tera for letting me know that I am not the only one with NLD!

Tara, I've thought my son, now 15, had a learning disability ever since right after his bout with acute cerebeller ataxia when he was 5. He is above average in intellegence, expresses himself very well, both in speaking and writing, is a philosopher - but has devil of a time with algebra and other maths as well as spelling. In fact, he fits many of the examples you listed. He is resisting being tested because of the stigma. Any suggestions? He is in an alternative school with outstanding opportunities and one-on-one relationships with his teachers (who would also like to see him tested). Hoping to hear from you. Kate Butler

My teenage son has NLD, but I had not come to terms with it until I read your webpage. I want to offer you my thanks for your courage in offering so much of yourself online and for your insight into the workings of your mind. Reading your webpage has changed my life by helping me understand, genuinely understand, my son. I knew he was struggling, and yet, I was untouched by the pediatricians and neurologists--most of whom were just a bit too anxious to label him ADD, drug him, and be done with it. Your words have given me the freedom to understand, and therefore to accept, my son. Now, I am prone to compassion and resolve.

Hi Tera! I came across your site doing research for a paper on NLD for one of my college classes. My interest stems from the fact that my little brother was recently diagnosed with NLD and is now attending a boarding school on the other side of the count y --- our area lacked the specialized resources to work with him. He just celebrated his first birthday away from home, 14 years old, and I've been missing him terribly and hoping that he is enjoying his new school. I really enjoyed your site because it gave me some insight into his world and a chance to possibly see through his eyes. It was very different from everything else I've read which was helpful in seeing the pattern of his disorder from the outside but sai little of what he was going through. Anyway, thank you very much. Somehow just reading what you had to say alleviated some of my worries about my lil' bro. --> Kris

We have just recently received this diagnosis and in some ways it's been very tough for all of us and in other ways it's a relief to have a name and, finally, some understanding of what her prob ems are. We live in Bellingham, WA. I drove to CA and attended Sue Thompsons class in July hoping to find some answers on how to help Shauna learn. She has been pushed through the public school system all these years & she's now a 2nd year senior with a out a 4th grade education level. We are fighting with the school to give her any assistance--they were going to graduate her. My daughter is wonderful!! And is very courageous to have struggled all these years without assistance and then to have to make the decision to give up her diploma to attempt to get some help---what can I say?? We knew that my son was "differently abled" yet very intelligent, very early on. We have gone from diagnoses of LD, ADD, Gifted, and once they even wanted to label him behaviorally impaired. He has suffered much verbal abuse from his peers, because of his differentness and social skills problems, even many adults and teachers have had great difficulty accepting and understanding him, although there have been some wonderful exceptions. He will be starting High school and I am concerned about him adjusting a d managing it all. He also has difficulty understanding and facing his own difficulties. How did you get to the point where you are now, in being able to accept and understand your NLD. How can I help him through H.S. and to become independent? I would love hearing from you.

Hi there, First, I must commend you on your page. It was great, and refreshing to read (compared to professional ones). Anyway, my 16 year old son has NLD, plus many other problems (which no-one can make sense of. The real problem is that here in Australia LD is not considered a disability (by the government), which means no medical, rehabilitation (incl. speech, motor skills etc), assessment, education help what so ever. It is especially difficult for LD with moto problems, sequencing, all that stuff, because no-one understands it. My son was severely emotionally abused early in his first year of high school (1995), resulting in 2 breakdowns, loss of functioning, depression and chronic fatigue etc. (I'm sure you now what I mean). I am trying to link into any information that might help him. Loss of memory, brain shutting down, anything. If you know of any contacts, please let me know. And keep up the good work, you're an inspiration. Janet.

I'm 46 and have had to put up with all the stuff you have also. But I've worked very hard at working (NOT OVERCOMING) with this crazy syndrome. I've gotten into computers and have worked for IBM, Hewlett-Packard and lots of important companies. It's be n a very silent, personal ideal but I've worked my hardest. Know anyone in Utah I could talk with?

Tera, Thank you for your wonderful web site. As an adult who was recently diagnosed with NVLD, it seemed like all the material I came across regarding non verbal learning disabilties was so negative. But you are such an inspiration to me. The people who have signed your guestbook give me hope. Finally, to the professionals who read your web site, quit being so negative and acting like we don't have a chance in life. Talk to us about how we have overcome odds, how we differ from your stereotypical impression as to what NLVD is, (I do have a sen e of humor, I enjoy art, metaphors, and books that have a 3-d Visual approach to learning), what we need to reach our full potential.

You seem to have given a lot of hope to a lot of people. That is to be commended. I fear, however, that the almost exclusive emphasis researchers place on school-age children neglects the fact that while a school envirnoment maybe forgiving, the real worl is pitiless. If you do not perform; if you can not compete in your field, you will not be exempted from the clock or provided with CAMS. You will be shown the front door. Do not take this as a criticism, but for some of us, recognition came to late. If there are any respctable professionals out there actively involved in aggressive sensory integration programs, I would be ecstatic to find out the who, what, when, where, ho , and why. As things stand, my future looks rather bleak--I am 25, a journlism student of some talent who simply cannot meet tight dealines. That is death in my field; and that is my only exceptional talent. I won my high school degree at the cost of nerv us breakdown, my bachelors by accepting a debiltating amphetemine addiction. My personal mythology includes Grendel, Plath, & Roland. It is not my habit to go gentle into that good night, but I am worn beyond possibility. Why is it that for all the energies being spent on describing debilitating conditions, there are so few (save for the gooey-headed new age champions of the most dubious forms of alternative medicine) focussed on trying to effective sensory integration tec niques. Is there anyone? Of all the discomfirts I have suffered, none compares to the isolation of my own little verbal universe, a place far from touch, sight, smell, breath, sex, and health.

This is the most comprehensive and informative site on NLD that I have yet to come across... I was just diagnosed with NLD two weeks ago...I am 42 years old (when did THAT happen?) I always knew that I was "Out to Lunch" in some way or another...now I know why...Actually I went in to be tested on manual dexterity and some other mundane things, b t a thunderstorm made the electricity go out and I got a chance to talk to the examiner and he figured it out..This psychologist also has NLD....I liked this guy so much that I am trying to get him and a couple of colleagues of his that I know to sit arou d all day with me in a coffee shop and we could recreate "Seinfeld" (yes, I'm only kidding!) My point is, that it's not the end of the world to have NLD...I mean we can train ourselves to have organizational skills, but isn't it great to have all those v rbal abilities? You know what else? Maybe, just maybe...we are all right and it's the world that's wrong!

Tera, Your Web page is wonderful. Your optimistic outlook is heartening. My son was recently diagnosed with NLD and I'm finding myself overwhelmed. I believe it is a mild case, however, I'm still getting clarification. His issues tend to be in the visua-spa ial and to some degree social. My biggest challenge is finding better ways to parent him. He is a very energetic and intense child coupled with his syndrom (which I'm still trying to understand) and I find myself short tempered a lot. I would love to hear what you felt were the best ifts your parents gave you (in terms of parenting). He is a wonderful boy with so much going for him. I'm trying to get back to focusing on all of his gifts. I just seem to be unable to manage his energy to keep things productive and I'm also having a hard time really understanding how he sees his world. Any thoughts, comments? Thanks! Sharon

When I was 6 I was diagnosed with dyslexia, ADHD, dysgraphia and dyscalcula so I can relate to your gifts. Those of us with learning disabilities do not have a disability just a different way of looking at the world, thank God- it produced thinkers such s Einstein, Churchill, Woodrow Wilson, Edison just to name a few. Regardless of the "disability" we tend to be misunderstood (when I start new jobs I am usually seen as slow and later when I know the job better than even those who had been around longer my ideas are usually dismissed because I am supposed to be stupid- my IQ is well above ave as is the case in many of us). I am glad there are people like you who are brave enough to speak out and educate the world as to what it really is to have a LD- KEEP IT UP.

Hi Teria, I am 19 year old female from brisbane Queensland Australia, who suffers NLD and would love to chat with you as i find a lot of people in society do not understand. When i was six weeks old i was dropped accidentally off a table by my older bro her causeing right hemosphere damage and affecting my white matter. i have hit so many walls in my journey of life, strugly with school work, friendships and now relationships, at the age of 13 i started noticing panic attaches coming on wich later turne in to Agrophobia and depression i was addmitted into a hospital for four months as i had not left my house for approxamitely 6 months, after therapy i was a lot better but still suffered panic attacks and anxiety so the the doctors put me on prozac which helped me but not cured my anxiety totally, i still hate crowds and nightclubs and concerts and the theatre and a lot of people find that very weird for a 19 year old. i now drive a car and have completed a diploma of applied science in Beauty therapy af er completely year 12 successfully, i have wonderful supporting parents and two wonderful friends and a very supporting loving boyfriend, i am still on prozac which increases my stress threshold but life is deffinatley looking up, i am unemployed at the m ment though next year my parents will be buying me a Business to run which will be a very exciting oppotunity for me. Due to society's lack of understanding i would really appreciate it if you could Email me back so we can have a chance to get to know on another and maybe start a very understanding friendship. Dear Tera, I love your jumpstation. I have a daughter aged 12, Hope, who seems a classic case of NLD, but so little is known about it here in England it is hard to get Hope diagnosed. She seems to fit most of Sue Thmpson's categories. For instance, the d fference between her performance and verbal IQs is 65 points - (63 for the former and 128 for the latter). Do you have a similar huge discrepancy? Also she suffers from panic atacks and obsessive coplsive disordr. Do you have any similar psycholgical sec ndaries? You seem to be doing awfully well at your studes and this gives us great encouragement for Hope - whom in all other respects is a prettty brilliant kid. I hope to hear from you soon. Hi Tera. My daughter age 4 (in 2 weeks) was just diagnosed two days ago with NLD. It was suggested to us by her current preschool that she has Aspergers, but we felt differently and sought out an expert's opinion. Well, here we are at the NLD diagnosis nd not knowing too much about it other than ordering a book by B. Rourke and reading your site. I do see similarities with a couple of things you said e.g. the late walking -- my daughter didn't walk until age 2 and the "spacey" look. She gets that occa ionally, I guess when the visual stimulus is too much. It would be so helpful to me if you could answer some of my questions. Did you go to a spec. preschool when you were young?? Have you been in regular classes since kindergarten, and if so did you g t pulled out of class for any special services such as OT,PT and Speech. My daughter does have the excellent verbal skills at this age, however, she doesn't converse as well as she should. One of my major concerns is what I have read about the socializat on aspect of NLD. Your story encourages me because you are so intelligent and seem to have made friends. I am very afraid that Danielle will be isolated or lonely. She is a very friendly child, but I don't know what will happen in the future with peer elationships. Can you tell me what your mom did for you to help you develop friends? I really need all the information I can get-- also what kind of programs have helped you the most? Are you in school now? Do you plan on going to college. And, have ou been able to maintain friendships long-term with people?? I know I am asking a lot, but I want to help my daughter in every way I can. Thanks. Thanks. I'm the mother of two children with autism: Megan, 7, is pretty high functioning, has always been verbal, is mainstreamed into first grade with an hour of Resource Instruction per day. Bill, 4, is much more severely affected. He's non-verbal, not potty trained, impulsive, etc. I've never heard of NLD until today when I was reading my mail from one of the autism lists I subscribe to. How is this diagnosed and if, as in Bill's case, he is a non-verbal autistic, does this mean he would automatically be d agnosed with NLD? Also, (this sounds so dumb) do you have to be completely non-verbal to have NLD? What can the school district provide besides what little speech therapy they do offer to these children? Any info you can give me will be very much appre iated! PS - I was fortunate to be able to become a stay-at-home-mom 18 mos. ago so I can become an autism "expert" and provide any and all appropriate services for my children so I can go and do and learn most anywhere, anytime. PPS - Jus finished printing out your home page: how cool! Look forward to getting to know you!

I found your site both interesting and informative. I myself am LD, diagnoised both late and incompletely, due to my largely-unconscious ability to 'mask' it and "function" - both rigidly, incompletely, and often none-too-well. However, I am almost through with graduate school at 32, though I was warned not to attempt college! Keep it up and pursue your dreams. Yours, Jarl K. Jackson

I came across your web site while researching NVLD for a friend. Very impressive. I am a volunteer for an organization that advocates for learning disabled children and adults, the Learning Disabilities Association of Connecticut. I'm also the father of a 9 year old with learning disabilities. I often wonder what will happen to him when he is older. Will he overcome his disabilities? Will he adapt? I feel better about it whan I see an exceptional person, like yourself, doing so well. If the rest of your life is like your web site, you are headed for big things in the future. Of course, the biggest obstacle to people with disabilities is people WITHOUT disabilities. Don't let them defeat you when you run into them (I'm sure you probably have already). Thanks for your useful contribution to the web. Sincerely, Kevin Daly

I am currently in a situation where I may not be able to stay at a new job be ause of "information overload" and the training method. Any tips or ideas are appreciated. Thanks....Susan.

Hi Tera. I'm a 18-year old with NLD too. I think you have done a great job with your website! I know what you mean by spatial perception problems. Everytime I walk into a room everyone holds on to the vases because I'm so clumsy since I can't always t ll how close to objects I am. I think this is a great idea, and hopefully more people will now understand more about this disability. I've just started to go to a school called Education Plus that is located in Montreal. It's been a month now, and I'm appy to finally be back in school. I've started grade ten and my classes seem to be going well. For a class project I'm supposed to find a pen pal on the internet and when my mother told me about your site, I thought that you would be a perfect person t write to. I'm sure we would have lots of things to talk about! If you are interested, don't hesitate to write. Looking forward to hearing from you. Valerie

I think your site is wonderful!!! I find it really interesting to hear things from your perspective, because Kayla i still learning how to verbalize her feelings. Hi there! I am 33 years old and was tested for a learning disability when I was 25. I didn't know any specifics of my problem until just recently when I read an article on NLDs. It's like a huge light went on over my head and I finally began to underst nd myself. You are so lucky that you are learning about yourself already. I really like your site and I like the things you had to say about living with NLD. That's where I'm at now, trying to understand how it affects my life so I can learn how to com ensate. The rub is that I started thinking that if I just understood it, I could fix it. It's hard to admit there is something you have no control over. I guess I'm feeling pretty frustrated right now. But I'm gathering all the information I can and I have the help of a wonderful, understanding therapist. I'm sure I'll get the hang of myself soon. I've bookmarked your site. Hi Tera, I love your website. I am 31 years old, and was diagnosed with NLD about 9 months ago. I always knew that that I had some type of learning disability as a child, but never knew what exactly it was, except being called a motoric disorder. After going th ough several careers, my parents indicated that my problem may be related to a learning disability that was diagnosed in early childhood. After being tested by a neuropsychologist, I found out that I have NLD. I have been in treatment since then. It ha been sort of frustrating because people look at me strange when I tell them about my NLD. I have yet to meet an adult with NLD. I was so happy to find your website. You have resources that I have found very helpful in understanding NLD better. Again, I thank you for providing this service, and I wish you the best of luck in college and in your future endeavers. Well done Tera - for both you and your mom!!! BTW, I've read all the books you list, as well as Star Shaped Pegs, Square Holes (I think). Have you read it?
