Hi Kirsten, I read your invitation to visit your website in the last TIG newsletter : congratulations for this great article "Homesteading on the Web" with Gwen Harris. It was very interesting to read your story, I'm really happy for you to see you have good health, great success with your transplant. I have a 8 years old son, in very good health. I do not live anymore with his father but we are still good friends and he is indeed a great father for our son. He had CML diagnosis two years ago, he had a first BMT in march 1998. He was very well until may 2000 and then he had a relapse : leukemia came back in an advanced stade. In june 2000, he had a second BMT, same donor than the first transplant, his brother. Before the transplant, in addition to chemiotherapy, e had also total body irradiation -TBI- (two twenty minutes seances, for three days). Medical technology progressed since his 1998 first transplant : that time, he wasn't given the whole marrow, but only stem cells, by transfusion. Today is day 135 afte transplant and he is very well : up to now, this second BMT is a great success for the greatess happiness of us all. We are so greatfull to the medical teams : Montreal Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital (transplant) and Montreal General Hospital (TBI), Dr D uglas Fish, hematologist, and Dr Roy, oncologist, and all the wonderful people at the hospitals. It's very generous to share your story on the web, I'm happy to share also. Thank you and good luck with all your projects : I'm a librarian too and I wish you the best with your career and your whole life! Gisele.

Kirsten, I was diagnosed with CML on July 3rd, 2000 with a white count of 450,000 and just released from the hospital last week after getting my blood cell counts and other complications under control. I just turned 27 on May 2nd (ironically). I am now in the process of considering treatment methods including transplant (my brother and only sibling is not a match). It was very comforting to read your story. Thank you, I wish you the best!

I really enjoyed reading your story. My dad died from CML at age 74. At his age (diagnosed at age 70) there was not much to be done except take Hydrea. Anyway, I am glad for the younger population that something can be done and they don't have to exper ence the slow death that he did (he had no pain whatsoever - thank goodness - just chronic fatigue that got worse and worse) Best wishes to you Kirsten!

Kristen, my wife came down with CML in June of 95, she had been on interferon every since, in April of this year her last bone marrow biopsy showed where she was no longer responding to the interferon. Her doctor now says it's time to start thinking abou BMT. My wife has 3 sisters, none of them matched which means unrelated transplant. My wife will be 49 in Sept, the risk we are told are higher for a woman her age, the percentage rate for success is also lower. If you have any information this please e-ma l me. We live in Boonsboro Maryland. Thanks alot, God bless .

It is often difficult to place the relevance on much of the mate ial, but to know that there are people "surviving" with leukemia gives me inspiration to become a better physician and learn as much as I can about not only the scientific aspect of the disease but the social considerations also. In addition to CML I also have Crohn's (since 1990). BMT has been know to cure Crohn's, too. I was on interferon for over a year and never was able to give myself the injections. I am always facinated by peoples responses when the get a good treatment result, they often thank God for it, and say things like "God is good" etc. i wonder what they say if the outcome is bad, or why did God do this to them in the first place> guess will never understand those folks with faith and/or superstition. oh well, what else would an agnostic say? thanks for your site, and you have done a nice job. I hope everything is well with your health now. I was diagnosed in January 1994 while I was pregnant with my only daughter. Like you, my brother wasn't a match and they wouldn't test my sister because she was only a half sibling. I did the Interferon d ring the last 2 1/2 months of my pregnancy and my daughter is fine. In June 1995, I began high dose chemotherapy. I was in and out of the hospital at that point up to six months. My doctor elected to do the autologous (self donor- stem cell transplant) I am now facing the decision of doing a allogenic transplant, with the hopes that my brother will match now enough for the miss matched related donor transplant. Right now I am having a hard time dealing with it again. It seems harder now that my daug ter is 4. I guess when the time comes to make the decision, I will get back into the battlemode and attempt once again to beat this thing. Right now, the cml is suppressed into the bone marrow, but I have developed myeloid dysplasia, do to my stem cell not grafting and being dependant on transfusions and growth hormones. I'm glad I was able to read your story. Thank you, I think reading success stories will get me through the decision process. P.S. Isn't it just like doctors to find humor in the mo t unrealistic situations????
