55.  Screening for breast cancer with mammography. JS Vaidya The Lancet 22/29 Dec 2001;358:2166, WWW, HTML, PDF If we believe Olsen and Gøtzsche, failure of screening to save lives is a sad fact that we might need to accept, and a plausible explanation may make it easier. Absence of benefit from screening may actually point to a very fundamental hidden biological clue - think away from the dogma of killing ‘early cancer’ and start thinking about living with dormant cancer.

56.  Management of early-onset breast cancer and BRCA1 or BRCA2 status. J S Vaidya, M Baum. The Lancet 24 Aug 2002;360:640. HTML, PDF  Hafty and colleagues’ data means that women <42 yrs have a high risk of  local recurrence risk (21% ipsilateral breast and 9% contralateral over 12 yrs); 20% will harbour a deleterious mutation of BRCA genes confering risks of 49% and 42%, respectively.

NewEngl J Med. 30 Jan 1997; 336: 374-375 WWW, HTML, Citations We have shown in a meta-analysis of 12 randomised trials that chemotherapy does not improve survival. Current evidence does not support neoadjuvant chemotherapy for oesophageal cancer.

60. Benefits and risks of screening mammography in women with BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations. Jayant S Vaidya, Michael Baum  JAMA, 23-30 Jul 1997; 278(4):290 HTML, Citations

BRCA genes are involved  in DNA repair so a person lacking functional BRCA genes would be exquisitely sensitive to even small amounts of ionizing radiation. Is mammography safe in these women?

61.  The new method of expressing survival in cancer is popular Jayant S Vaidya, Indraneel Mittra. BMJ 4 April 1998;316:1092 , HTML, Citations Patients appear to prefer their prognosis to be given as the chance of surviving their normal life span or its proportion.

63. Does screening really reduce mortality? Jayant S Vaidya, Michael Baum, BMJ 4Sep1999; 319:642; HTML  Using the same figures, one can also conclude that screening may have caused up to 2900 extra deaths due to cervival cancer in 1997.

67.  Passive smoking: Study was flawed from outset: BMJ 30 August 2003;327:501  WWW, WWWPDF, PDF This tobacco sponsored study set out with a wrong assumption that there would be a difference between spouses of smokers and spouses of non-smokers in the 30 year period when public smoking was so common that this difference would small anyway- so it is not right to say that absence of difference is equal to no difference.
