Chickasaw Bluffs/Bayou



William T. Sherman sent three divisions on the Yazoo River on the 26th of December 1862 to attack the Confederate defenses of the city of Vicksburg from the northeast side. The next day, another division of Sherman's command farther up the Yazoo River. That day attempts were made to take the Walnut Hills. The hills were very defended by the Confederates. On the 28th the same happened, the Yankees tried to take the hills. The next day, Sherman ordered an attack towards the Vicksburg defenses that brang high loss. After this loss, Sherman stopped his attack on the defenses and fell back.
