The Coalition for Family Safety

The Coalition for Family Safety is holding meetings in several areas of Florida to inform the public of issues such as Tort Reform, HMO's, Keeping Defective Drugs and Products off the market, and other very important information on dangerous legislation proposed this year that threatens to endanger the safety of Florida's families by weakening or destorying their rights to hold individuals and corporations accountable for the injuries they cause. And many of the proposed laws--if enacted--will impact women, children, and the elderly the hardest.

CONTACT GOVERNOR BUSH AND ENCOURAGE HIM TO STAND UP FOR THE SAFETY OF FLORIDA and FAMILIES BY VETOING HB 775. SAMPLE LETTER
May 5, 1999 Dear Governor Bush:
I urge you to veto the tort reform bill that passed the Legislature on the final day of session.
Before the 1999 Legislative session even began, the business community was proclaiming victory. On the campaign trail, you had pledged to reform our tort system.
The wealthy business lobby that contributed heavily to Republican campaigns were counting on you and their legislators to come through with a bill that would shield them from responsibility for their reckless behavior.
Business predicted that, with your encouragement, tort reform would speed through the Legislature and a bill would be on your desk in the early weeks of session.
Instead, tort “reform” turned into a session-long stand-off between the House and Senate. The bills that emerged were so inequitable and so biased against the people of Florida, that even lawmakers expected to back it could not, in good conscience do so. The states leading newspapers wrote editorials condemning the dangerous provisions contained in the tort bills. During the final frenetic hours of session, HB 775 passed the Legislature. This bill does not accomplish the goals you had hoped to achieve. It does not reform our civil justice system. It dismantles it. It delivers Floridas families into the careless hands of big business interests that care more about their profit margins than the safety of their products and services. It is an affront to the people of Florida.
As a voter and a Florida resident, I am asking you to please veto this dangerous legislation that will benefit selfish businesses at the expense of Florida citizens.
    Sincerely,
