During
the 50's and 60's IBM became the major employer in the area. Although not
quite as stongly as in the heyday of the 80's it still is the major employer
in the area. On June 10th, 1998 just a little more than a week after tornadoes
struck the area an economic bombshell has hit the area. Anitec Corp. which
employs 500 people and is the largest employer in Binghamton anounced that
it would be closing by the end of the year. Some of these people will find
other jobs but I doubt whether they will pay $12 to $20 per hour which
is what these people were getting paid. The company that bought them six
months ago said this operation was no longer profitable. Now they will
probably write it off in taxes to increase corporate profits. It is too
bad that profits come before the lives and dreams of hard working Americans.
One positive thing to say about
the area is, we are still the "Carousel Capital of The World" with 5 operating
carousels.
Our weather runs the
gamut and we have four true seasons. Winters can be brutal with daytime
hi's of 25 to 30 degrees and lows of 0 to 5 below. We can get lots of snow
too. We've had 30 inch snowstorms. Summers are usually hot and humid.
