Our Miracle Signs from God

Steven's Birth Mark

When Steven was born on May 22, 1994, we noticed he had a birth mark in the shape of a sideways heart. I have always told him, that was where his angel kissed him, and left her mark, so that he would always remember he has a special angel watching over him. Little did I know how much of that we truly believe now.

Steven's Visit to the Doctors

May 03, 1996

When I was changing Steven's diaper, I notice some red dots, that I thought were just a rash. But I thought I had better call the doctors and get him checked just in case. 12 hours later we were sent to UCLA for further tests as all his blood counts were low. While we were at UCLA waiting for test results, I looked at the dots again, and wondered what prompted me to call the doctors, because they really weren't that bad. When some of the results came back, the doctors told us that we were lucky we brought him in when we did, as he probably would have died from internal bleeding, due to his low platelets of 3,000. They said it could have only taken one more bump or fall. Now I truly believe Steven's angel prompted me to take notice of those red spots and to take him to the doctors.

After Initial Drug Therapy

As told By Steven's Grandma Koss

Some things you need to know, is that Steven was getting Weekly transfusions of Platelets, and bi-weekly transfusions of Red Cells at this time. Also Steven's middle name is Thomas-Grant. This is our rememberance of the day Steven's mom and I felt we got a sign from God.

It was a Saturday Evening the end of July 1996. I spent the night with Shannon and Steven because my son was out of town on business. And Shannon didn't want to be alone. I was happy to go over and spend the night. So we decided we would play a game called "Ouiji", which neither of us really believed in, but we were willing to give it a try. So we played for a little while. Nothing happened. So we decided to watch T.V. We changed the channels to try and find something on.

We stopped at "Touched by an Angel". I enjoyed the show, and Shannon had never watched the show before. So this was Shannon's first time watching it. The story was about a guy in a Coma who wasn't supposed to live. But God sent the Angels to help him. The guy's name was Steven Thomas.

Monica, one of the angels, had told Steven that "things would be okay, he just had to make some changes." Shannon and I looked at each other with our jaws open. And I said, "That was a sign from God." Then I asked Shannon for a picture of the Blessed Mother with 7 different articles of Saints that the Pope blessed 50 years ago. (It was in a friends family all those years, and she lent it to us, while our Steven Thomas was going through this difficult time.)Any way, I took the picture of the Blessed Mother and put it over Steven's heart and prayed, then put it on Steven's back and we prayed again to the Blessed Mother.

A couple of days later, Steven had to go back to UCLA for a check up and blood test. His counts were above the transfusion point, and from that moment on, Steven never needed another transfusion. (At least not until he relapsed a year and 3 months later.) From that moment on Our Steven Thomas got a new lease on life. He went into remission. At the time Steven was diagnosed he didn't have any good bone marrow matches, and we believe he responded just in time, and when he did relapse, there was a good 6 out of 6 match. We really believe that Steven's Angel gave us a sign that night watching "Touched By an Angel" that things would work out, and we know our prayers were answered.

Sunday December 14th, 1997

The day before Steven was admitted to UCLA for preparation of the Bone Marrow Transplant

Sunday morning, I went to church with our daughter Serena for the last time till Steven was released from UCLA. The day was overcast, and the sun was barely out. The church was lit up only by the lights inside the church. After Communion, I was praying and asked God to give me strength to get through this difficult time that was heading our way. And to lift me when I'm down, and reassure me he was with us through the long upcoming weeks that we were facing. When I opened my eyes, a light shone through the church and went over my shoulders and lit up the Church. I took that as a great sign. Thank you God.
