AMY'S QUESTION COLUMN:

Q # 1: Does anyone have information about starting a private group home for adults with autism? This would be a home with one to three residents, offering as much independence as possible, yet with 24 hour care.

Q # 2: Here's what I am asking - I want alternative therapies that people have used successfully to help the autistic person - details in what they did and how it helped.

MY BACKGROUND:

I was born in Royal Oak and raised in Northern Michigan. I have a Bachelor Degree in Music and a Master of Social Work Degree. I am the youngest of three siblings - I have one brother and one sister. My brother is in the Army, currently stationed in Korea with his wife and children. My sister has autism, and in February she took possession of her first home. It's a rental, and she hasn't moved in yet because 24 hour staffing hasn't been found yet, but the goal is in sight. We are so excited! She has been wanting to move out of the Adult Foster Care Home for years now.

Even without the power of speach, my sister Mary has always been able to demonstrate that she is intelligent and that she wants to reach out to others. Her courage in the face of what seem to be impossible odds has been an inspiration to me.

MY BELIEFS:

FACILITATED COMMUNICATION:

Facilitated communication, is a method of written communication that has stirred up a lot of controversy. Many people do not put any stock into it. I have seen my sister Mary use facilitated communication to express herself for a number of years now, and I know that it is a valid form of communication.
