The Fabulous Fifties

Remember the good old days, rock & roll, hot rods and drive in movies? When the music, the cars, and the people made us smile. A time of Hula Hoops, Rock and Rollas and Pop- It necklaces, bomb shelters in the backyard and sock hops at the gym. Remember Frankie Avalon, Fabian and Kookie? Clarabelle, Mr. Greenjeans and Nellybelle? Silver, Trigger and Target? We sure do, that's when we grew up and it was a great time, and the music was fantastic, Dion & thr Belmonts, The Shirelles, Buddy Holly, Drifters, The Crystals. Remember the Saturday night dances, Fire Drills on Main Street, Wolfman Jack, Drive-In Movies. How about the TV shows, I Love Lucy, Howdy Doody, Lassie, Ed Sullivan and of course American Bandstand. These are memories most of us will never forget. Slick back your hair, or put on your poodle skirt and enjoy your visit. Hum a little "Doo Wop" just for old times sake . . . . .

Times were simpler, music was lighter and cars were more powerful. But, you could fill the tank for five bucks, and cruise the drag on a Saturday night. Guys were cool and would show you the power of their rides at any stoplight.

Perhaps you would stop in at your favorite burger joint and order a cherry coke and fries, but whatever you did you did it with friends, plenty of them. We are the largest generation yet. If we didn’t have our own wheels, we borrowed Dad’s. Mine was a borrowed 1957 Chevy. If only we could have appreciated these classics then.

Another great place on a Saturday night was the drive in. Plenty of great movies too. Rebel Without a Cause, Wild Ones, Beach Party . . . The drive-ins were part of what we did on weekends. There aren’t many around today. Probably because we remember going as teens and there is no way our kids are going to get the car to go there.

Things were different then, worries were different. Teens worried the bookstore would be out of the Cole’s notes for their English novel, not the video store being out of the movie version. Parents worried their daughters would sneak off and have their ears pierced, now who knows what they may have pierced (son or daughter).

The decade that gave birth to Rock 'n Roll. When Friday & Saturday nights might be spent “Cruising the drag” in your dad’s 57 Chevy.
