Mac's Probe GT Turbo

Mac's Probe
Mac's 93 Probe GT

Welcome to my 1993 Ford Probe GT Turbo Page. My original plans for this page was to have a very commercial site. By commercial, I mean a site full of stats and technical information. While you might find some of that stuff here on my page, it is no longer my intention. My main purpose for currently maintaining this page is to just tell about my car. If you are looking for technical information then you might want try out some of my links located at the bottom of the page. They should be able to lead you to many useful places, whether you want to make your Probe GT a track monster, or you just want info on how to maintain your beloved car. If you would like to see my photo albums of my car than scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the thumbnails. If not, than please read on!!!

Probe GT Engine
The Probe GT Engine

My car was made on October 2, 1992. It has a 2.5L/153ci DOHC V6. The engine is manufactured by Mazda and the body and interior is made by Ford. I bought my car in March of '96' with 50,000 miles, although it's been rolled back to read 38,000. Before I bought the car, I had never even thought about owning a Probe. Actually I was looking for a pick-up truck and then I saw my car sitting there and I had to have it. Sounds like the perfect love story doesn't it? Now I want another one.
My car has undergone a series of alterations, in which the biggest of changes is the installation of a turbo kit from Thomas Knight Automotive. The installation took a bit longer than I expected, because I had a hard time getting my exhaust off. It was rusted on there pretty tight! Once I got that off, everything else was cake. I had the kit installed within the next couple of weeks, but progress was slow. Once had the entire kit installed I had the opportunity to drive the car for a day or two before the clutch blew out. Here's where the story takes a turn for the worse!!!

Now that my turbo is completely installed and the car feels like the fastest thing I've ever driven, the clutch decides to blow out. I wasn't at all surprised by this, but what I was surprised with, was the problems that this whole situation caused. I ordered a Center Force Dual Friction clutch to have installed. When I got the car back from the shop I noticed that the turbo wasn't spooling up. After playing with the car for a few hours and trying to figure out why, I discovered that I had a big exhaust leak and the turbo wasn't receiving the exhaust to spool. I took the car back to the shop to have them fix the exhaust leaks. It turned out that it wasn't just exhaust leaks, they had accually broken the cross under pipe. The cross under pipe is the pipe that crosses under the engine and joins the front and back exhaust manifolds together for the collection of exhaust to spin the turbo. When I got the car back, I noticed that I was leaking stuff from the transmission and that the turbo was taking a long time to spool up. Back to the shop I go. The turbo was taking so long to spool because they stripped the studs to the exhaust manifolds which was creating small exhaust leaks. The reason I was leaking stuff from the transmission was because I had a torn CV boot. When I got the car back this time it was still spooling slow, I was still leaking stuff from the tranny, and now I was leaking oil from the sending unit. The shop said that they couldn't fix the manifolds becuase they said that I stripped the studs. Yeah, OK! The shop also said they couldn't fix the transmission leaks because it was a direct result of driving aroud with out a cat-back exhaust. I can't really dispute the transmission claim, but for some reason I don't feel that it's entirely accurate. I decided to do some inspecting of the engine bay to find out why the I was leaking oil from the sending unit. All I did was pop the hood of the car and touch the sending unit and the thing just popped off. I looked at the whole closer and saw that the sending unit broke off inside of the engine. Because of this, the engine is now incapable of holding oil when it is running. The shop refused to fix this because I tampered with it. I am now so completely frustrated about the whole thing that I'm done messing with the car. I'm all out of money and patience. I just wish I had left the car alone. The problems I now have with my car are not a result of the turbo, but more a result of poor mechanics. These mechanics with their sorry work ethics and lack of respect for the customer have left my car with some serious scars. So, now for this reason, this "Web Site" is no longer active. I will however leave it up on the Web as a memorial of my 93 Ford Probe GT and what it once was. Even though this site is no longer active there is still alot of great things to see here, so please continue reading and visit my photo albums and links.

I have made a few minor performance and cosmetic mods to my car in the past to make it fit my personality. Unforunatly, I'm having a hard time trying to figure out what that is. We'll start out my list of mods with stuff I have painted. It goes a little something like this, I painted my intake black, valve covers yellow, center caps red, brake calapers red, parts of the dash silver, parts of the doors silver, air vents red, and door handles red.... I was not completly happy with the results of all the things I painted. The engine, brakes, and center caps I am satisfied with and think they look pretty good, but I'm sorry I ever painted my interior. I have since gone through the process of getting replacement parts for the dash and door panels. The other mods I have done in the past are no longer a factor because of the turbo. These mods include home made cold air intake and running the car without a muffler. With that pathetic combo I was able to pull 15.2's in the quarter mile a couple of times. I have also rewired my fog lights to run without the headlights having to be on. I think that last one was my overall favorite. If your still brave enough and you would like information on how to obtain your own Turbo for your Probe GT, MX-6, MX-3, or 626, please call Geoff Knight of Thomas Knight Automotive at (305)665-5450.
