In 1986 I bought a 1986 1.4 Alliance 4 door with a bad automatic transmission from a friend of mine for $100 to fix up for my son. I bought an abandoned 1.7 Encore with an automatic in it for $10 and put that transmission in the Alliance.I gave it to my son to drive in high school and now he has drivin it through collage at OU too! I had to put another engine in it a couple of years ago as he did not watch the fluid levels well enough. He always complains about the car because it isn't "cool, but it just keeps on going.
My current race Renault is a 84 two door sedan that I converted to a 1.7, I purchased the engine out of the Spec Racer that came in 3rd at the SCCA Runoffs the last year they used the REnault engine, so I would have a fresh engine. The conversion from 1.4 to 1.7 involved a lot of wiring changes as the 83-84 and 85 up harnesses are not compatable. If any one out there wants to do the same thing, I can provide some help in what you need to do. Just email me at the link at the end of this site. Anyway I built headers for my 1.7 as no one in the world has them available to my knowledge. I also modified the tops of the strut towers to get more negative chamber by cutting and welding to move the tops of the struts over 1". It looks factory and should help with cornering adhesion. My plan is to take it to it's first race at Mid Ohio on the 5th and 6th of July and see how it does. If it runs as well as it sounds it will fly! I am tempted to paint it in the Williams Renault BTTC colors. No one here in the states would even understand or appreciate it though.
4-6-01 I modified the top of the towers again to use Eurosport VW Golf adjustable chamber plates and converted the Koni struts to coil over. I used 450lb springs in the front and no front sway bar. With this combination on Hoosier tires I won the 1999 Mid Ohio track championship. In the year 2000 I only got out 4 weekends in which I got a third place, a second place, two first places, 3 poles, and I won the WOR games event at Mid Ohio the past two years. Take that Hondas and VWs.
I bought a 1984 Renault Alliance 2 door automatic in a lovely tan color with 23,800 actual mileson it! It looks like a brand new car but has a rod knock. Some guy bought it from an old lady for his daughter to drive to collage and she loaned it to her boyfriend and he drove it wide open until the rod bearing went. It doesn't knock too badly, I can drive it in the driveway. I am going to put a different crank and bearings in it April 2001, my project next week.
I also own a 1984 Encore 1.4 with a roll cage in it that was used for a Rally car. This one is rough and is in storage for now. I will convert it to an SCCA IT-C car sometime unless someone buys it from me. Did I mention that it has a cage? It runs and drives but needs a wheel bearing and an exhaust.
I also have access to a 1985 Encore with a 1.7 and a cage. This was one of the Renault Cup Cars that I drove. I am going to do an SCCA IT-C conversion on this one too.
