1980 Ford Mustang Cobra Turbo

After a while,  I discovered just how *uncool* Ford Pinto's really were and I had to make another change.  Now half the reason that I'd moved to the States in the first place, instead of trying to find work somewhere in Europe, was the chance to own an American Classic. Unfortunately my Mustang was not it.

I still love this car and I'd probably buy it again in a heartbeat giving the chance.  The only problem was that in 1980 Ford didn't know how to build a turbocharged engine and they were unreliable to the max.  I think they were only made for a year or so before being replaced by the 5.0 Mustang GTs.  Mine broke down regularly and because of the air dam in the front couldn't even be towed and I always had to get a flat bed truck to drag it back to the shop for repair.  It also had a leak somewhere in the passenger footwell that I could never find and as a result the carpet on that side was always soaked.  My girl friend just *loved* that.

Speaking of girl friends,  Carol started dating me,  in spite of the Mustang,  but didn't agree to marry me until after I'd got rid of it.  I'm not sure if those two events were in any way connected....  To this day, the word Mustang will still bring a sneer and a shake of disgust - damn and I really like those new Mustangs.... :)
