DAVE & SUE STEEVES' 1987 BUICK GNX #378!

A BRIEF HISTORY OF ONE OF THE BEST MUSCLE CARS EVER BUILT!

The Story behind the Buick GNX

The GNX was designed to be the "Grand National to end all Grand Nationals". Outwardly the GNX  resembles the Grand National but the modifications performed on these cars made them one of the fastest, best handling and most sought after cars Buick had ever built.  It was developed by the then Advanced Concepts & Marketing Vehicles manager, Mike Doble. The car was to be converted by ASC/McLaren.  The basic concept was to build the car to be a full second quicker than the Grand National and improve it's handling.

Plans called for Engine blueprinting, head porting, special bearings, shot-peened rods, and a high-rpm valve train but testing of stock Grand National engines showed that the GNX goal could be met without opening the engine. There were only 547 GNXs built and all were 2 door coupes and optioned exactly the same, there were no additions or deletions!

To quote the Owners manual "The GNX is a special Grand National with certain modifications to accentuate it's already outstanding performance!" 12 years later this is still one of the most collectible cars out there.

We bought our 1987 Buick GNX #378 in 1998.  It only had 7500 miles on it and is totally stock!  We have always wanted an example of Buick's fastest and most luxurious musclecars and when we found this one we knew it would be in our garage soon!  Our auto interests run the entire spectrum of the hobby and we have been involved with all types of cars from Ford Model A's and muscle cars of the 60's and 70's but our GNX is our pride and joy!  We also have belonged to a few car clubs over the years and are currently members of the Connecticut Cruisers Street Performance Association.  We try to attend as many area car shows and cruise nites as time allows and have also gone to the Turbo Buick Show Off sponsored by the The Source in 1998!  We are not concerned about keeping the GNX under the cover all the time and feel that the original owner was keeping the mileage low so we could enjoy driving a 12 year old "NEW" car!  We are also in the process of a full frame off restoration of a 1969 Hurst Olds and have recently purchased a 99 Camaro SS!  We hope you enjoy our web site and if you need insurance for that special car of yours be sure to click on the link below for our page on classic car insurance.  We are the owners of Steeves, Smith & Associates, Inc and know first hand what your insurance needs are!

We just got a new vanity plate for the GNX in August. It reads REAL X! So many people ask us if it is a real GNX and now they will know for sure!
