Alfa Romeo 155 Story

Line

Alfa Romeo 155 was launched out in the beginning of year -92. It was replacement
for the Alfa Romeo 75 and abandonment of rear-wheel drive as a means of putting power
to the road. It is I.DE.A house styled and it looks very wedge-shaped, with high rear and low
front.

The first 2.0 TS was eguipped with 8 valve engine, but due to variable valve timing system
(which Alfa presented many years earlier) maximum power was 143 Bhp (without cat 148 Bhp)
and low rev torgue good. There were also smaller and bigger engined versions like 2.5
V6 with 166 Bhp and 155Q4 (or Cloverleaf 4) with 16 valve turbo-charged,
four wheel drive 190 Bhp model.

In the spring of -95 big modifications were made, biggest change was new
16 valve Twin Spark engine and also design was modernized, lines were expanded
and track came 40mm wider, that means lot in driving. Also fine wooden steering wheel,
gear knob and facia panel arrived to this new model.
There were also so called sport version available with rear spoiler, big wheels and tyres
(205/45/16) and better interior.

But the big thing was Alfa´s new Twin Spark engine (Cuore Sportivo), which is also used
in other Alfa models. 2.0 16V Twin Spark engine is very technical with its 2 cams,
8 spark plugs, 16 valves, 2 balancing shafts, 9 belt pulleys and variable valve timing system,
which gives 90% of its torque already in 2000 r/min.

Alfa Romeo is possibly only manufacturer, which makes engines 2 spark plugs and
4 valves method with each cylinder.

July 1995 'Performance Car' wrote about a 155 2.0 16V,it stated "There's now just
the right amount of power for the chassis, and just the right soulful sound for an Alfa.
There's no torque-steer during acceleration,and no tramlining,or any other front-drive
naughtiness either. The whole package now feels precise and willing....So,
Alfa lovers can at long last rejoice for the 155,because it's now a car you can easily
fall in love with. And thats precisely how it should always be with Alfas!"

The magazine 'Car' reported on a 155 2.0 16V in July 1995
and said "what makes this engine such a cracker is its crispness.
In these days of catalysts, electronic management and variable valve timing,
an Alfa engine with all the bite and rasp an Alfa engine has ever had is cause for joy.
It has you blipping down through the precise, sweet-shifting gear box just for
the devilment in it, and revelling in the responsiveness and precision of
your control over the power source. Drive the 155, and you're driving a complete
experience....A family-size car so able to delight an enthusiast, so accurately
targeted to the pleasure zone that lurks beyond mere intellectual appreciation is
a rare thing in 1995. Lets hear three cheers for the Alfa 155 2.0 Twin Spark 16V,
a proper sports saloon in the Alfa tradition. And proud to flaunt the fact."
