January 2000

Happy New Year !   Hope everyone made it through the “Y2K” scare -- I bet all those people who bought a cave out in the middle of nowhere sure are happy.   And what about all the grocery stores the week before New Years -- around here it looked like it does when they announce that a big snow or ice storm is supposed to hit.

Our last meeting was held January 9, 2000 at Vernís home in Cabot.  We had a pretty good turnout and started several committees for the new year.  We also announced all the new officers for 2000.   We had a visitor join us at the meeting, Rodney Randall, a GI friend of Vernís.   Our next meeting will be February 6 at 1 p.m. at Vern's place in Cabot.  Hope to see you there !!

Some of the committees formed at the January meeting are for the Tri-Club Picnic in Eureka Springs that is tentatively scheduled for September. Right now, we are looking at September 15-17 .  We will check at the All-Club Round-up in February for any conflicting dates.  The committees are as follows:

Hotels --- Mark & Jannett Williams
 Entertainment --- Lee Jones
 Food ---  Sherry Jones

We also had some fun night committees established and will be headed up by the “Kelso Kuties”.  Sherry Jones will be making some plans for a club poker run night.  We will announce more plans for this as soon as the weather gets a little warmer.   Jannett Williams and Robin Pipkin will be checking into a bowling night for sometime in February.  We will check on sites, times and dates and announce at the February meeting.

The club voted to change the way associate memberships are handled.  In the past, associate membership ran in yearly terms from the date of joining.  This tends to lead to some confusion for the treasurer in keeping up with when membership is to be renewed, especially when there is a change-over from one treasurer to another.  It is has now been decided that associate memberships will run from February through the following January.  Anyone joining during the year will pay a pro-rated membership fee and then renew their membership each February.  That way, all memberships will be due at the same time and will simplify record keeping.

If you would like to renew your associate membership, please complete the following form and return to:

 Central Arkansas Pickups
 c/o Jannett Williams
 903 College St.
 Kensett, AR 72082

In order to reduce our newsletter costs, we are attempting to revise the records regarding both active and associate members.  If you know or think that your active membership dues are over 3 months in arrears, or that your associate membership dues have not been paid, please contact Robin Pipkin at (501) 726-4455 after 5 p.m. to preserve your membership. Please return the form below stating that you wish to remain a club member to the above address so that we may continue to provide a monthly newsletter to you.

This newsletter will be the last one sent out to everyone on the current mailing list.

February 2000

Our last meeting was held February 6 at Vern’s home in Cabot.  We had a pretty good turnout and had several items up for discussion -- including the all favorite one of mine -- a CAR SHOW !!

Mark Williams presented the club with hotel information for the upcoming Tri-Club Picnic sponsored this year by CAP.  More information will be announced at the March meeting.

Bud Kelso brought up the idea of having a car show this year.  Several members are working on a site and a good time to have one.  We are still in the planning stages only folks -- a decision should be made at the March meeting whether or not we will have a show this year.   If anyone has any suggestions on a good site and time, trophies, sponsors, games or activities, please let us know at the March meeting.

Our next meeting will be March 5, 1 p.m., at Vern’s home in Cabot.  Hope to see you all there !!!

Special Congratulations !!!    It’s a BOY and a GIRL -- Vern’s a grandfather again !!  Congratulations to Vern’s son, Richard and his wife !!

March 2000

Our last meeting was held March 5 at the home of Vern Gobble in Cabot.  We would like to welcome two visitors to this meeting, Rodney & Erin Randall -- hope to see them again soon !!

We discussed more about the upcoming Tri-Club Picnic plans.  We have three weekends open and they are the 8th-10th, 15th-16th, and 29th-1st.  Lee is going to check with the other clubs on a convenient date for them and about how many people will be attending the event.   Lee also mentioned several entertainment ideas.  There is a riverboat ride, train ride for lunch and dinner, the Passion Play, and a Police Museum.

It was voted at the March meeting to postpone the idea of a car show this year.  We are very interested in the idea of a car show, however, finding a place to have one has been a little bit more difficult.  The Cabot WalMart was concerned about the amount to space it would take up in their parking lot.  The Cabot K-Mart was going to be having a district meeting later this month and would check with their managers about having a show on their parking lot.  However, they were also concerned about the amount of traffic through the parking lot during the show.

Best wishes to Dolly Morris for a speedy recovery !!  George mentioned that his wife is doing a lot better, but they have to give away their cat due to her newly discovered allergies.  Their cat is male, has been fixed and has a very good nature.  Anyone interested in giving this cat a very good home, please contact George or Dolly at (501) 327-4276.

April 2000

Our last meeting was held April 2 at Vern’s home in Cabot.  We would like to take this time to welcome two new members -- well, not so new but still mighty glad to have them with the club.  They are Rodney & Erin Randall of Jacksonville and they have a 1972 Ranchero.  And Brent & Kim Doney of Carlisle and they have a 1956 F-100.

Lee had spoke to some of the other clubs about the upcoming Tri-Club Picnic.  The most convenient date seems to be September 29 - October 1.  Any club that receives this newsletter is welcome to come -- the more the merrier !!   We will be running a flyer in the next few months with the host hotel phone number so everyone can make their reservations.  It would be helpful if any clubs or individuals planning on attending the event could contact us with an idea on how many people will be coming so we can make better accommodations on rooms and entertainment.

Several members recently attending the Austin Fest Car Show in Austin, AR.  Some of our members wound up in jail -- don’t ask, it was all for charity.  Hopefully, those photos will be on the website soon !!  Brent Doney, Vern Gobble, Speedy Gonzales, and Johnny McClure won trophies at the show and everyone had a really good time.

Robin Pipkin is taking orders for cooler bags with our club name and logo on them.  They will keep things hot or cold for up to 30 hours and can hold several items -- the cost is $19.50.  Anyone interested in ordering one, please contact Robin at the number located in the front cover or get her at the next meeting.

Our next meeting will be a great event for the young and the young at heart !   We are planning to meet at the Little Rock Zoo about 10 a.m. on May 7.  After our tour of the zoo, we will meet at the park and have a picnic.  Each family bring a lunch for your family.  Bring all the kids and grandkids -- hope to see you all there !!

I would like to thank all of the CAPS members for coming out and supporting the Austin Fire Department at our recent festival.  To those of you who brought out your vehicle and entered it, I greatly appreciate it. And I also
appreciate those who came out to show their support even though their vehicle is still under construction. Thanks go out to Tinnie, Robin and Jannett for running the registration booth for me. You all did a great job. The show was a success and I know the money raised will be put to good use.  I would also like to acknowledge four members who walked away winners that day. To Johnny McClure, Vern Gobble, Speedy Gonzalas, and Brent Downey, I say congratulations guys. The show participants chose the winning vehicles and it was great to see these guys receive that honor. One of the busiest places that day was the concession lines and the jail. Everyone knows those CAPS members love to eat, but this day equal time was spent in jail. For those of you that were unable to attend, I will explain that one of the most popular events of the day was to pay to have someone arrested and put in the onsite jail. The person arrested could then beg to have someone bail them out, with all the money going to the fire department. I think before the end of the day every CAPS member had been arrested and some several times. It was quite a funny sight to see Lee, Eddy and Vern begging for cigarettes through the chain link fence. Speedy, Frank and Mark just kept asking for the jailer to send over a female officer to frisk them. In the end it was a lot of fun and again, I thank all the members for showing me, the town of Austin, and our local Fire Department such loyalty and support.

Henry Ford Meets God . . . .

Henry Ford dies and goes to heaven. At the Gates, St. Peter greets Ford, and tells him, "Well, you've been such a good guy, and your invention...the assembly line for the automobile...changed the world." As a reward, you can hang out with anyone in Heaven you want."

Ford thinks about it, and says, - "I want to hang out with God Himself."

So, the befuddled St. Peter takes Ford to the Throne Room, and introduces him to God. Ford then asks God, - "When you invented Woman, what were You thinking?"

God asks, "What do you mean?"

"Well," says Ford, "You have some major design flaws in your invention:

1. There's too much front end protrusion.

2. It chatters way too much at high speeds.

3. Maintenance is extremely high.

4. It constantly needs repainting, and refinishing.

5. It is out of commission at least 5 or 6 of every 28 days.

6. The rear end wobbles too much.

7. The intake is placed too close to the exhaust.

8. The headlights are usually too small.

9. Fuel consumption is outrageous.

Just to name a few."

"Hmmm...," replies God, "Hold on a minute." God goes over to the Celestial Supercomputer, types in a few keystrokes, and waits for the results. In no time the computer prints out a report, and God reads it.

God then turns to Ford, and says, "It may be that my invention is flawed, but according to these statistics, more men are riding my invention than yours.

June 2000

Our last meeting was held at Lee & Sherry Jones’ home in Cabot.  We had a good turnout in spite of the nasty rain, had a great cookout, and got to listen to a really good band in Lee’s shop.   A little rain can’t spoil a CAP cookout !!
Special thanks to Lee & Sherry for hosting the cookout and to Vern for arranging for his son’s band to play for us !!

We would like to welcome some new members to the CAP bunch -- Linda & Richard Davis joined us last month; Eddie Pipkin, son of Eddy & Robin Pipkin, joined us at the June meeting.  Eddie has a 1966 F-100 pickup.  We also had a few visitors with us Keith & Brenda Worton and Cliff & Jenny Gobble and children.

July, 2000

Well, it’s my turn to fill in for Jannett again. She’s been busy with her new job and I volunteered to help out. There were several requests after the last time I wrote the newsletter, but I’m going to do it again anyway ........

BRANSON --  Another year and another trip to Branson has come and gone and once again we had a great time. But hey, when was the last time you heard of the CAP folks going anywhere and not having a good time. For those of you that missed it, all I can say is you need to try and arrange it so you can get there next year.
Most of us left at various times on Friday. Jannett and I met with Eddy & Robin and Brent & Kim and headed out that morning to get up there early. Lee surprised us and caught up with us around Leslie. He managed to take off earlier than expected (even though he was going to have a tough week afterward to make up for it ) to get to Branson and get started on a fun-filled weekend. After all, what would a trip to Missouri be without the King of Branson .... The Fat Man himself !!! After we got there it wasn’t long before the others started arriving; Speedy, Don, Frank, George. Sherry, Johnny & Renee, and Randy & Charlotte had already got there before we did. After we got settled in we had a chance to meet and talk with some of our friends that we don’t see often enough.
Saturday was the big day. I don’t know what the exact count was on trucks in attendance, but there were a lot. There were a lot that I recognized but several that I got to see for the first time. As always there were some really good looking trucks to see. I was happy to see a lot more vendors this year. I’m not sure if Jannett was after she saw all the stuff I brought home. What the heck, sometimes it’s just too good a deal to pass up. Eddy was set up a selling from his vast inventory of parts he has collected over time. Oops, maybe I should have said Robin was set up selling Eddy’s parts. I was doing my usual and trying to supply everyone with various Hot Wheels and other F-100 toys. It was a great day for the show, with a little cloud cover and a nice breeze to keep it from being too hot. Lee and Doc once again handled the games for the day. It looked like everyone was having a good time down there. Johnny managed to come away the winner of the push rod drop. That afternoon the awards were presented and we were once again awarded the Club Participation Award. Randy also got a “Durn Good Lukin’ Truk” award for his ‘62 Unibody.
Sunday morning we got up and around and met with everyone for coffee and doughnuts to say our good-byes. After a few to many doughnuts we loaded up and headed to the house.
All I can say is, I can’t wait until next year !!!
Our last meeting was held at Vern’s house on July 9th. We didn’t discuss much except getting ready for the Branson trip. Bud brought some visitors and soon to be members, Bonnie and her kids, Daniel and Dillon.
A little reminder;  if you are planning on attending the Tri-Club Picnic, you might want to get your reservations made. We will be staying at the Alpine Lodge in Eureka Springs.  To make your reservations, please call (501) 253-7175 or contact them at www.eurekanet.com/alpine.  The cost for a room is $45.  Make sure you tell them you are with the Tri-Club Picnic or Central Arkansas Pickups and if you have any problems making reservations, please ask for Fred.
Anyone interested in placing an order for the CAP cooler bags, please contact Robin Pipkin at 501-726-4455 or at the next meeting.  The price is $19.50 and they look great !!
We would like to welcome some new and returning members to the club. Rick & Alice Kellum are from Forrest City and joined up at the show. Tommy & Lisa Haycraft and Tommy’s parent also rejoined at Branson.

The next meeting will be held August 6th at 1:00 at Vern’s house in Cabot.

Some Things to Remember ...

Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.

It's always darkest before dawn. So if you're going to steal your neighbor's newspaper, that's the time to do it.

It may be that your sole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

If you think nobody cares if you're alive, try missing a couple of car payments.

Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

There are two theories to arguing with women. Neither one works.
