From Sow's Ear To Silk Purse!

Why The Banham Spyder?

Just before Christmas 1998 I decided that I was bored with watching TV every night and wanted something to do instead. I had always fancied myself behind the wheel of an AC Cobra replica but after some brief research I realised three things:

  1. I didn’t have enough money.
  2. I didn’t have enough mechanical knowledge.
  3. Since the Cobra is only a two seater, my four year old daughter would probably object quite violently to being put in the boot (trunk).

I then started looking around for alternatives. After a trawl through the various Kit car magazines I hit upon the Banham Spyder. This seemed ideal because:

  1. It purported to have on on the road budget of £5000.
  2. It was all based on the orignal floor pan of the Skoda and so my lack of mechanical ability didn't matter.
  3. There was a 2+2 option.

On top of all that, it looked the business and the "factory" was only 10 miles from my house.
