Imperials

A look at the Imperials my family and I have owned - hopefully, there will be more to come...!

This is the first Imperial my family owned - we put 250,000 miles on it before the front end gave out, which my father decided would cost too much to fix.

He sold it to a friend, who in turn put the well broken-in engine in a race car...

A distinctly different car, this represents the first Imperial that I owned. Mine was beige and was "only" a Crown, but it looked much like this one. It was originally my father's car, but he had wrecked it and let me have it on the grounds that I would repair it. Needless to say, it was the only one of it's kind at my high school!. I had this car up to over 115 MPH, and its 0-60 times were unbelievable for a car its size...

This was a beautiful car - we had two of them, a white one and a brown one. The interior was fabulous, including real walnut trim throughout.

This was my second Imperial - it looked like it was a block long!

1974 Imperial LeBaron

My last Imperial - sadly, also one of Chrysler's last... Mine was gold, and the interior was like nothing else you could imagine, with pillow seats and pure luxury throughout.

Chrysler made one more year of these in 1975, then named the same body as the New Yorker Brougham, which is now also a part of history and nothing more. The Imperial badge has been used since on Chrysler models, in the early 80's (look behind the '74 in the picture...) and 90's, but they were merely upscale Chryslers and no longer a separate division.

My thanks to the The Imperial Mailing List for many of these images - if you'd like to see more, please pop over there to take a look...

Chrysler?

Chrysler has manufactured the Imperial for decades, starting in the 1920's. The Imperial line of Chryslers was the high-end car, often used for limousines and "town sedans". Up until 1955, these cars were badged as "Chrysler Imperials".

However, starting in 1955, the Imperial was assigned its own division, which it held onto until the demise of the original line of Imperials in 1975. Cars since that time that carried the Imperial badge were once again "Chrysler Imperials", including the coupes in the early eighties and the four door sedans in the 90's.
