Sport Compact Car magazine featured an excellent and very
interesting article in its May/98 issue. The arcticle, by Dave Coleman,
debated whether or not the new 240sx is a worthy successor of the legendary
Z. Four enthusiasts expressed the way he felt in his own column within
the article. Here's a few things they said...
Don't get me wrong, I love the look of the 240sx, the
interior is modern and functional, and the car is as agile as a ballet
dancer...However, I think the engine sounds too much like it belongs in
a truck. Oops, it did...Nissan should have used the smoother-running,
performance oriented Maxima 3.0 litre V6 engine if they wanted me to believe
that the 240sx is an offspring of the Z-car.

Nissan's brilliant engineering was castrated the moment
their cars set sail for U.S. shores. The 280zx 2+2 was the last straw...The
twin-turbo Z, though awesome in horsepower, did little for lagging sales;
it was like an answer to a question nobody asked.
--Les Bidrawn
The SX offers better handling, comfort, and amenities
than the old 240Z could ever hope to...But what the SX doesn't have is
the 240Z's character...As something that could be called the new Z,
the SX doesn't quite make the cut.

...Take the very capable 240SX chassis and re-style
the body, re-design the exhaust manifolds on the VQ30DE for rear-wheel
drive duty, attach it to a Nissan Silvia transmission, plop the new 6-banger
in the 240's chassis and voila - instant Z!
