Of the classic pickups built from 1967 through 1972, none popular then the Cheyenne, which was the style leader of the line-up and is the hottest of the series today. The main styling touch of the Fleetside was the pickup box was as wide as the front cab, creating a sleek new sporty look. The Cheyenne was a upscale version of the Fleetside model. Although the Cheyenne sported a eye catching exterior trim package, the name projected a rugged image. This half-ton hauler had the comfort of a car. Full carpeting, crome bumpers, two-tone paint, uniquely trimmed door panels, sporty instrument cluster, optional rally-style wheels and attractive side moldings told everyone this was one bad bow-tie. Sales totaled less then 10,000 in 1971, then jumped to 40,500 in 1972 once the people caught on. This is the last and probably the most popular year of this generation of trucks. The only noticeable difference between a 1971 and a 1972 truck is that the rear view mirror is now mounted on the windshield. The black stripe around the grille is removed and a new trim package "Highlander" is offered.
