JNK 681C

JNK 681C was built originally for the 1964 Commercial Motor Show, It is based on a Ford Thames 36 chassis (676E) and was used as a demonstrator by Harrington until May 1965, and as such was painted in the demonstrator colours of white and lilac.

It was bought and first registered by SP coaches of Sutton. At this point it had the lilac colour painted into a sort of 'Hammerite' green. This firm also used the name of Cavalier Coaches. In September 1966 JNK suffered a major accident, and, since Harrington had by now shut down, was sent to the Plaxton depot at Ware. Evidence of this repair came to light during the restoration, as the coachbuilder had inscribed his name on the panel.

By 1967 JNK was with Blue Saloon Coaches of Guildford (ABC taxis). It was by now painted white and Royal Blue. We have been told that during its stay with Blue Saloon, it was called 'The lady'. They used it until 1970 when it was sold to Motts of Aylesbury. It was the first coach in this firm to have 52 seats and forced air, so it was highly regarded. It was painted into the Motts colours of Ford white and sunshine yellow.

By 1975 it was sold to Michael's Coaches of Carshalton who 'modernised' the interior. (colour scheme was now Tahiti blue and gold - its first non white based livery!) This meant the seats were re-upholstered in blue Draylon (originally green 'bobble' moquette) and then painting the ceiling black. The original lino was replaced as well. They also fitted a new (home made)dash board that was so big it restricted the drivers hands around the steering wheel! In 1980 Motts bought JNK back to stop it becoming a car transporter and it was repainted back into Motts colour scheme and used on school work until 1983, when it was laid up at the back of the depot.

In 1995 It became the original vehicle in our group, and at the time we thought it was the only Legionnaire to survive. We have so far reconstructed the side locker, the boot area and put a new back end on. (Thanks to the Ipswich Transport Museum for that one) The sides have mostly been repaneled and a new gearbox has been fitted to replace the original that kept jumping out of gear. A new clutch and starter motor have also been added. The brakes are being rebuilt also with many new parts. We have carried out a total re-wire on JNK. When we got it in 1995 we suffered a loom fire on the journey back to the North West which prompted us to look at the state of the wiring. Since we want to keep the vehicle it was felt prudent to replace 30 year old wires with modern, so that will be a job we won't have to do again.

Below is a link to our restoration pictures. There are only nine for now, but I will add more soon.
