Note: A mandatory seal from the electronic control box was missing on Hakkinen's McLaren. Team McLaren was deemed to be at fault and lost their ten points in the Constructor's Championship. The FISA ruling was that the missing seal did not affect the performance of the car, so Hakkinen was allowed to keep his ten points in the Driver's Championship.
A dominant race for the two McLaren, placing
them at the head of the Constructor's Championship, six points clear of Ferrari, with this
one-two finish. This is Mika's 16th career win.
Driver's Championship leader Michael Schumacher, fourth on pole, was taken out on the
1st corner by a late braking Ricardo Zona, who smashed into the Ferrari from behind.
This left the race wide open for the McLaren team who took full advantage of
Michael's absence to lead the race all the way to the end.
Eddie Irvine is in hospital with an appendcitis scare, replaced by Jaguar driver
Burti.
The remaining Ferrari of Rubens Barrichello was unable to keep pace with the
superior speed of the McLarens and was even outclassed by De La Rosa until his Arrows blew
an engine on the 27th lap, retiring the Spaniard from third place.
The two McLarens of Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard lead the procession until the
end only changing leads between themselves during pit stops. The McLaren pit crew
displayed the EASY REVS pit board to both their pilots during the race, encouraging them
to conserve their cars. A highly deserved one-two finish for McLaren.

Lap 40 | The two Prosts driven by Alesi and Heidfeld come together heavily, as Alesi did some late braking into a tight corner - Heidfeld didn't see him coming up the inside and turned into him, taking both cars out of the race. Alesi later claimed he was under team orders to overtake. The smash left a lot of shards of carbon fibre on the track, but this didnt cause problems for other drivers. |
