1/ David Coulthard (McLaren);
2/ Mika Hakkinen (McLaren); 3/ Rubens Barrichello (Ferrari);
4/ Villeneuve (BAR); 5/ R.Schumacher (Williams);
6/ Trulli (Jordan)
A solid performance froma superior McLaren
team today, finishing first & second.
Michael Schumacher had his Ferrari on pole position, with the McLaren of David
Coulthard alongside. Coulthard was outgunned at the start, dropping to third into
the 1st corner behind Ferrari's Rubens Barrichello.
Coulthard took the race to the Ferrari, overtaking Barrichello in a classy outbraking
maneourve on lap 22. Michael Schumacher had a clear 7.2 second advantage over the
Scot at this time, but slowly Coulthard was able to whittle into this lead. His
first pitstop was over a second quicker than Schumacher's on lap 24, and from then on he
was over a second a lap quicker than the race leader, and was clearly on a charge.
The McLaren had superior straight line speed and was awesome under brakes. By
lap 33, Coulthard was able to draw alongside Schumacher, but the shrewd German held his
racing line and forced Coulthard wide on the Adelaide Hairpin - Coulthard giving an
uncharacteristic one finger salute!
Coulthard relentlessly pushed Championship Leader Michael Schumacher and on lap 37
was again in an overtaking position - first forcing Schumacher to move wide to defend his
racing line, then cutting in & alongside quickly on the lead into a tight corner.
Under the rules, Schumacher was not able to move twice to defend his racing line,
and could only watch as Coulthard took the lead. Coulthard certainly deserved his
victory after overtaking both Ferrari's on the track.
A long pitstop of 16.8 seconds ruined Barrichello's chances of staying with the race
leaders, Hakkinen out ahead of him. This left Hakkinen a clear track to also catch
Michael Schumacher. On lap 57, Hakkinen caught Schumacher who suffered a gear select
problem into a corner and the Fin was able to pass. Schumacher's Ferrari was not
able to see through the distance, and retired with a blown engine just a few corners
later.
Both Jacques Villeneuve and Ralf Schumacher also had good races today, finishing in
4th & 5th spot respectively. Ralf particularly was aggressive in his overtaking,
his Williams responding well.
The McLaren 1-2 finish, with Michael Schumacher retiring, tightens up the run away
Schumacher's lead. He is now 12 points clear of Coulthard in the Driver's
Championship, and Ferrari are 6 points ahead of McLaren in the Contsructor's Championship.
Fact - 1/. Honda have signed with the Jordan
team to supply works engines next year.
Fact - 3/. Renault have bought the Benetton team and are renaming it Renault.
Rumour - Villeneuve may be racing for Jordan next year, replacing Trulli.
Rumour - The Prost mechanics down tools (for a few minutes) in protest over
management's words over their poor qualifying times!
2nd July, 2000. Round 9. Hot today, some rain forecast, but did not
eventuate.
