A superb race for Hakkinen, whose car was clearly the best on the day.  His great start beat Schumacher into the first corner and Hakkinen was never headed, increasing his lead to nearly 27 seconds by lap 58.

Michael Schumacher shook off his first corner hex (he has not made it past the first corner in the last two GP) but was unable to catch the Flying Fin Hakkinen.  Schumacher was challenged for his 2nd position for the entire race by Coulthard's McLaren, who finished just a second behind Schumacher.

Barrichello was held up by the slower Williams of Ralf Schumacher for much of this race.  The rest of the field remained static on this circuit which is renowned for it's difficulty in overtaking.

The lead changes in the Driver's Championship after this race with reigning World Champ Mika Hakkinen taking the lead for the first time this season.  He has 64 points ahead of M.Schumacher (62 pts) and Coulthard on 58.

* Note: Nigel Mansell's 1992 lap record set in a car with a 3.5 litre engine (they have 3 litre engines now), slick tyres (currently grooved), and with fully active suspension, traction control and a host of other features now banned.
