Dual exaust crossmember.

I was looking for a good price on a dual exaust crossmember that would also fit a 700R4 transmission. After a while a guy I work with said he could make one. So heres how you do it.

What you will need.
1) A pice of angle iron about 4-5 inches wide.
2) A crossmember out of your year malibu.
3) A die grinder (wizzer)
4) Cutting torch.
5) Mig welder

How to make your crossmember accept dual exaust.

Step one- Take the crossmember and use chalk or soap stone to measure out a notch big enough for the angle iron, making sure you dont end up cutting the crossmember in half.

Step two- use a cutting torch or die grinder to cut out the notch in the crossmember, cut it a little short of your lines you made then see how the angle iron fits, do this until you have a good fit.

Step three-  Before welding the angle iron in place. Lay the crossmember on the frame of the car to be sure you didnt bend it at all (good thing we checked because we actually bent the crossmember a little).

Step four- Weld the angle iron in place. Make sure the area is clean, its kind or a pain to weld dirty metel.

Step five- use die grinder or cutting torch to remove the acess angle iron. All thats left to do is prime, paint and put it in place.

700R4 Crossmember

The finished product, notice the angle iron doesnt pass completely through the crossmember. Kind of a bad pic because of the steam.

What you will need.
1) Crossmember out of your malibu.
2) Your frame, motor, and tranny. ( to test fit and mark out what you need to do).
3) Die grinder
4) Mig welder.
5) ruler

How to do it

Step one- Bolt motor+tranny into place, then bolt crossmember in place.
use a ruler or tape measure to measure out how far over you need to move the transmision bracket on the crossmember. You will also need to meeasure how much you need to shorten the transmision bracket.

Step two- Use the die grinder to cut the factory welds and take the transmission bracket off the crossmember.Shorten the mounting bracket as much as you measured . Bolt the crossmember back onto frame to double check measurements. To be safe I tack welded it in place while on the frame to be sure of measurements. Remove from frame and finish the weld job. Thats it. pretty simple.
