A very comprehensive and nice looking site. Although I am from England, I live in Holland and I have been lucky enough to visit India. I loved the cars you have on your streets - and the bikes and the buses and the huge orange Tata trucks!. My best memory
was travelling along the National Highway in Sikkim, where a landslide had trapped a poor little Suzuki Omni. At least 30 men picked the little bus up by it's bumpers and lifted it clear of the deep sticky mud! - only in India!!!.

Hari,
I would appreciate your advice. I'm looking for a good vehicle to travel the roads in northern India. There could be as many as 6 of us. Can the Tata Safari seat 6 comfortably? Can 3 men fit comfortably in the back seat? What about the far back - can
ou actually sit back there? Finally, if you are familiar with the Tata Sumo, can you compare the differences in size and comfort? Thanks in advance for your help.

I am an Australian and I am interested in Indian cars.
We currently recieve Marutis 800s in Australia Rebadged and sold by Suzuki Australia.
We also get TATA pickups ( we call them UTES!) These Utes have been popular with Battling farmers in Australia due to their cheap price compared to regular utes from the other well established makes- Toyota,Nissan,Mazda,Ford, GM Holden(Isuzu),Daihatsu,S
zuki and recently KIA.
This niche ( the cheap farm trayback) was in the past filled by such vehicles as the Holden Drover a rebadged trayback Suzuki Sierra(Maruti Gypsy),Subaru Brumby,Daihatsu Rocky pickup, Lada Niva Pickup and even a convertable-top trayback MINI MOKE!!.
Tata Australia intend releasing the Safari here soon.
I have read that part of the TATA production line tooling originated at the NISSAN plant in Melbourne AUST.
I think the INDICA could find a market here too.
I particularly like the TATA ESTATE and believe an updated version of this car has a future in foreign markets such as Australia where rear wheel drive cars are popular. With petrol engine cheap price and 4wd this could fill the crossover niche that SUB
RU and Toyota Tercel filled in the 1980s.
Back in th 1970s, the HOLDEN TORANA was a popular car and was available with 4,6,and 8 cylinder engines! Winning many motor races before its replacement in 1979. The TORANA is more or less a HM CONTESSA.
GREAT SITE. MORE POWER TO YA!

Just a comment about the premier padmini. I am a professional fiat 1100D and 1100 specialist.
The fiat 1100D had a 1221cc engine, it was bored out to 72mm from the original 68mm bore 1089cc engine.
The engine block used in the Premier Padmini is the enigne block from the Fiat 1100R 1089cc engine. This engine has a full flow filter, whereas older Fiat 1100/1200 enignes have 2 oil fliters( a main filter which is a brass gauze and a by-pass filter, iet
er cartridge or spin-on.
The cylinder head from the Premier padmini is the same as the 1100R engine, the inlet manifold and outlet maniflod are those used in the 1100D engine.
Another feature is the rated top speed at amximum power which corresponds to 130 kph.
If you need any further information, feel free to ask me.
Thank you

I enjoyed reading about Indian cars. In the US, they sold the Daewoo Cielo as the Pontiac LeMans from 1988 thru 1993 and it was, by all accounts, a horrid car. It continued on in Canada as the Asuna GT for 2 more years. It's actually based on the pre
ious generation Astra. It was cool to see some cars that we don't get here, though- like, well, pretty much every car you described. Tata should start selling its utility vehicles here; they'd probably sell like mad. It's amazing the difference between
Mid-sized" in India and "Mid-sized" in the US is, too. The smallest car sold here would probably qualify as mid-sized in India. And my car? Well, it's considered huge, even in the US.
Thanks for a cool website

Darling,
I just saw your page on the Ambassaddor. It is nice to present information on so many Indian cars but it is pointless to source incorrect information. Think about it in just one way. Do you think a car would have survived for falf a century if it was a 'k
atara'? No dear, certainly not! I have driven many cars in my life through almost many cities of India. No car (including Mercedes, Ford, Opel) other than Ambassador could handle such a varied terrain with amazing comfort. As far as power and quality is c
ncerned, I dont think that 1800cc, 75bhp and a EURO1 is that bad. Isnt it?
secondly all specifications of the car you have entered are either wrong or have changed. Update your site dear, or it is your website and not anything else that will become obsolete.

I have been noticing engine knocking with A/c on even in higher (3rd, 4th gear) and the car dealer in (Tej Motors) in Ahmedabad says it is not knocking but prinking (this word is new to me) and there is no problem with the tuning but it is due to bad qual
ty of petro the petro is never 87 % octane but less.
I feel the quality of car is poor and the engine itself is not good with A/c on.
Can you advice what I can do in this regard.

YOu have provided a nice and comprehensive description of the vehicles, with an unbiased opinion. Equally commendable is the way you have highlighted the `indigenousness' of the cars - yes, the Tata vehicles sure do every true Indian proud.
Just a small comment - guys like you do the hard work, and ones like me try to pass comments ... but `just thought that it would also be very nice if you could have some info on some cars not currently manufactured: The Standard 10, the Herald Marks I, I
and III, The Gazelle (first Indian car designed by an Indian: Nasir Hussain, on a Herald Chassis), the Dolphin, the Montana, the D1, the Standard 2000, and so on.

Very informative site on Indian made cars.
You have not included some of the more recently
launched cars in India eg. Hyundai Santro,
Daewoo Matiz and Tata Safari/Indica. You can
find links to these models and many others in
my home page.

Good web page, although there are some small errors, the Ford Escort pictured is the US version, not the one they sell internationally. Also its not a Maruti Gypsy picture - its a Suzuki Samurai (S insgnia on the grill and a shorter wheelbase) and the Pr
mier Padmini pic is actually Fiat 1100D (yes the one in which rear doors were hinged on the back). I also had heard a lot about TATA Sumo (good things) but its design looks primitive compared to the SUVs offered by Jeep, Mitsubishi, Nissan or Isuzu. In
act it looks inspired by mid-eighties design of Isuzu Trooper. Indian auto industry has a long way to go.
Definitely a good page though. How about including the prices too?

You have a good site no doubt, but I think you need to update it more frequently. I am a die-hard auto buff. I am in US right now butI like to keep a track of whats happening on the auto scene back home, until I am back in India.
As far as I know, the SKODA Felicia project has been scrapped and so as been the Daewoo Nubira. please update the site more frequently.
Sincerely
Gagandeep

Hi! Congratulations on a job well done. Though I have not gone through all the models, I have spotted the following flaws in your pictures: 1. The Ford Escort you have shown is the US version and not the one that is being sold in India, 2. The Premier 118
E shown is a Fiat 124 (note the round headlights), The Padmini shown is a Fiat 1100 - actually the Padmini's exterior design is based on Fiat 1100D (D for Delight).

Cool page<-the only one i could find devoted to Indian cars. Man....its weird....seeing how you call the Maruti Zen "on steroids"...with a 1.something litre engine! My uncle actually jst bought one...my other uncle has had a fiat for over 20 years....Also
...the Mercedes Benz 220 has a top speed closer to 190kph...it only has 140 or so HP....it cant go that fast...do Indian car magazines do 0-60mph(100kph) tests, 'cuz if they do, that may be a good thing to put on your page.
