Speed Traps in Malaysia

The objective of this homepage is;

  • To promote road safety by advising the public the extensiveness of speed traps.

  • Understanding laser and radar gun technology.
  • Understanding and use of road users signal.
  • Speed limit in Malaysia.

  • 110km/h for highway.
  • 90km/h or 80km/h for major trunk road.
  • 50km/h for city, town and village area.
  • 30km/h for residential area.

    The Malaysian Police's laser has a range of about 2000m and night capability, but they normally focused their camera between 40m and 200m. It has been witnessed that they shoot at night in pitch dark and on a dizziling day. And they don't even give up when Air Pollutant Index (API) reached 200.

    We have found the police like to hide;

  • Under overhead bridge.
  • On overhead bridge.
  • In the bush.
  • Between center divider.
  • In a car on road side or emergency lane.
  • On a hill beside the highway.

    Since late 2000, the Police liked to hide behind bush (either on center divider or hill top) and parked car, aim the laser gun from behind and set up road block between 5km to 55km away!

    Locations listed in this homepage are those withnessed by road users. As laser gun is portable and policeman is not stupid, so don't expect them to keep their regular spots all the times. Select area for police speed traps.

    Speeding reduce time to response. However, according to the Director General of Road Transport Department (Sin Chew Jit Poh, July 11th., 2000); 40% of road accidents in the country is caused by following the front vehicles too closely, 26% dangerours cornering, 13% dangerous overtaking and 12% overspeeding.

    In a survey conducted on road accidents in Britain; less than 5% of accidents is directly caused by speeding. In total, less than 7.5% of accidents is caused by speeding either directly or contributed. Source: 'Autocar' issue May 12, 1999

    In another survey conducted on speed limit in Britain; some local councils have reduced speed limit at accident spot from 60mph (96km/h) to 30mph (48km/h), but has very little effect on rate of accident. Source: 'Autocar' issue May 12, 1999

    Yet another study in the US, placing speed trap at accident black spots will reduce accident rate, provided these speed traps are known and publicized.

    Statistics for 'Op Statik' during the 1998's Kongsi Raya festival has shown;
    - Imposing strict speed limit didn't reduce road accidents.
    - Most accidents happened on trunk and secondary roads not on highway (about 15%). According to Minister of Transport Dato seri Dr Ling dated February 4th, less than 10% of overall accidents happened on highway.
    - Number of accidents is not indirectly proportion to number of summons issued i.e. Issuing more summons (especially speeding tickets) didn't reduce road accidents.
    The Star and NST, February 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 98

    According to Royal Malaysian Police Op statik IV statistics, less than 6% of road accidents occured on expressway. Source: NST, Jan 7,8,9,10 2000

    Again, the statistics from 'Op Sikap' December 2001 shows; less than 10% of road accidents and fatality occured on the highway. It would be more effective if the authority focus their resouces to reduce road accidents on Federal and States roads.

    Once again, the statistics from 'Op Sikap III' which conducted during the 2002 Hari Raya period showed less than 10% of road accidents and fatality occured on the highway. Which lead to the perception that instead of reducing road accidents, the Government is using speed traps to generate revenue.

    We proposed the following strategy to reduce road accidents;
    - Increase speed limit to spread the distance between vehicles, especially on trunk road.
    - Educate and enforce keeping safe distance from front vehicle, give way, keep left when not overtaking, worn out tyres and sleepy driving.
    - Mandatory jail sentence for commercial vehicle driver whom involved in fatal road accident.
    - Many if not most sand carrying ten wheels lorry (lorry hantu) on the road are using faked registration, hence they are ruthless on the road. Strict enforcement would reduce death among motorcyclists.
    - Mandatory retention of commercial vehicle for 30 to 90 days which involved in road accidents.
    - Upgrade all major trunk roads to two lanes.
    - Concentrate safety resources on trunk and secondary road.

    If you still like to speed, you may receive summon by post and may cost you at least RM100. If you don't receive any summon by post, doesn't means you don't have any outstanding summon; just that the Police hasn't come round to issue yet and it may take over one year. In Malaysia, with the amount of speeding ticket issued or going to issue, is no longer about road safety but revenue collection.

    We do not endorsed speeding, possesion of radar/laser dectetors, or commiting of any offences.
