Welcome to the Type 3 racing page

A brief history of the type 3 model

The Volkswagen type 3 model was introduced at the Frankfurt motor show in 1961. The first model to see the light of day was the 1500 sedan, known as the Notchback in USA.

Later that same year came the semi-sedan, Fastback and the station wagon, Squareback.

The 1500 Notchback had a 1500 cc enginge based on the Type 1 engine but with a different type of fan to keep the engine flat. This made it possible to store luggage, not only under the front hood, but also under the rear hood.

In 1963 the engine was updated and the 1500 S was born with twin carburators and 54 hp. In USA the Notchback model is quite popular as a cal-looker which is a little bit funny, because the Notchback model was never imported by Volkswagen of America.

The type 3 was imported to sweden between 1961 and 1973. My favorite model, the 1600, was available from 1965 to 1973 (note the similarity to my web adress 6573 *smile*).

In sweden they sold 99.412 VW 1500 and 1600's between 1962 and 1973.
Due to the construction with the engine behind the backwheels it became a quite popular rally car. In the seventies Volkswagen even made a special rally edition of the so popular 1500, which I have heard was called 1500 T.

Racing with the type 3

My racecar is a 1973 VW 1600 squareback (station wagon). I'm building it as a touring car. This is really a low budget racing project so I am starting out with most parts as "original" as possible and developing along the way.

I'm going to run the car in a swedish championship called "Yokohama Cup". The rules for the championchip is based on a motorvolume / weight comparison and for that I think my car is perfect.

The improvement from the original car is the engine. It is a water cooled Volvo B20 with approx. 130 hp. I've been called a blasphemer for calling me a VW freak when putting a Volvo engine back there, so how come I don't race with the VW engine?

1. Cost - The VW engine is expensive to hot up

2. Endurance - Cast iron withstands the heat better than aluminum

3. Torque - The Volvo has a much higher torque

Want to see under the hood?

The engine is mounted to the gearbox with an adaptor, i.e. a metalplate and I'm using the Volvo flywheel, starter, cluth assembly except for the disk which is from a VW bus.
I built a new engineholder and also mounted an upper link to withhold the torque from the engine.
The Volvo engine doesn't fit under the lid so I've built a firewall to separate the engine from the drivers compartment.

The radiator is from a Volkswagen Golf and is mounted in the spare tire compartment. Tubes lead the water through the car. An oil cooler is also mounted in the car front.

All the electric is ripped out and rewired. A rollcage is mounted and a special racing seat with 6 point belt is used.

I'll hopefully start racing next season (1998).

If anyone out there has some experience of track racing with the type 3, 5 speed gearboxes, rear disc brakes or anything that could be useful in my racing, please mail me!
